The Huerter they fall

The Atlanta Hawks are a mess, teetering on the brink of elimination down 3-1 to the Miami Heat and heading to South Beach for Game 5.

The Heat’s inferno defense is causing all kinds of chaos for the Hawks, including forcing Atlanta into almost 16 turnovers per game. Miami has focused that fury on Trae Young, who has coughed up the ball 24 times in this series, but those mistakes are contagious.

Backcourt mate Kevin Huerter posted four turnovers in Game 4 and outside of a clean sheet in Game 3, has two or more turnovers in the four games so far. The Hawks are desperate for someone to step up and support Young, but Huerter has his own issues. He’s shooting just 30% for the series, including a rotten 27% clip from beyond the arc.

Miami is aggressively playing the perimeter with switch-happy schemes while jumping the passing lanes for deflections and steals. The 6-foot-7 Huerter is most comfortable as a catch-and-shoot option but finds the ball in his hands more often with Young locked down and is drawing smaller and peskier defenders on the perimeter.

We’re capitalizing on that chaos to continue in Miami tonight and we’re taking the Over on “Red Velvet’s” turnover total, which is paying out a pretty plus-money return for a guard averaging two turnovers per game in the series.

Pick: Kevin Huerter Over 1.5 turnovers (+140)

Don’t jump, JJJ

Memphis Grizzlies shot swatter Jaren Jackson Jr. reacts to a pump fake the same way a cat reacts to a cucumber. Google it, if you don’t follow.

Jackson has been limited in this opening round series due to foul trouble, most notably the last two games in Minnesota where he’s racked up 11 personal fouls and played a total of just 44 minutes. That’s stung for the Grizzlies, who rely on the versatile forward as part of their offensive playbook.

Triple-J has been limited to 13 points and 13 rebounds with four total blocks in the past two contests, after posting stat lines of 12 points, four boards, and seven blocks in 24 minutes in Game 1 and 16 points, seven rebounds, and one block in 27 minutes in Game 2.

Jackson needs to stay on his feet — a point he’s likely heard over and over since Game 4. With Memphis head coach Taylor Jenkins lambasting the officiating and a Game 5 ref crew featuring “let’em play” officials like Marc Davis and Gediminas Petraitis, there’s a good chance he logs more minutes than the past two outings.

Jackson’s ability to block and change shots is vital to the Grizzlies' success but so is his ability to stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting. He hasn’t been unable to find a rhythm due to foul issues pulling him off the floor, but if Jackson can stay on the refs’ good side, he can make those long-range looks.

He was 4 for 7 from deep in Game 2 and shoots 34.8% from beyond the arc inside the FedExForum, where he averages almost 16 a night. With the Grizzlies offense needing a lift and Ja Morant struggling, Jackson can be that guy — if he stays on his damn feet.

Pick: Jaren Jackson Jr. Over 13.5 points (-105)

Basketball Jones, ooo baby, ooooooo

Rookie guard Herb Jones is making a name for himself in the NBA Playoffs with his tireless motor and intensity. Jones was the defensive star in Game 4, recording three blocks and two steals while checking Phoenix’s top perimeter threats.

Hard work on defense often leads to easy offense and Jones’ ability to create turnovers and lead the charge in transition has led to an uptick in his production with the ball. He's amassed nine assists in the series so far and has also been able to put up points, posting tallies of 13, 12, and 14 in the past three games.

Jones is scoring off turnovers and getting to the hoop (just like he did at Alabama), collecting more than half his buckets in the paint. That aggressiveness also led to him making 7 of 8 free throw attempts in Game 4.

With the Suns cracking down on New Orleans’ interior talents Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas, who combined for 56 points last time out, Jones could enjoy extra space on offense and continue to make plays on both ends of the floor.

Pick: Herb Jones Over 11.5 points + assists (-104)
