Rockets vs Hawks Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

The injury bug has been biting the Atlanta Hawks and with them being in the midst of a back-to-back, it's going to make their next matchup against a well-rested and far more competitive Houston Rockets team that much harder to overcome.

The Houston Rockets will look to extend their three-game winning streak as they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

Houston has been scoring wins against some of the league’s best competition, and I’m taking it to cover again in my Rockets vs. Hawks predictions for tonight.

Let’s take a closer look at this matchup in my free NBA picks for Tuesday, January 28.

Rockets vs Hawks prediction

My best bet
Rockets -6 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis
The Houston Rockets have been one of the NBA’s best teams this year, as well as one of the best stories, as their young team seems to be fully growing into its talent. Nothing has shown that more than the last three games, in which Houston has beaten the defending champion Boston Celtics on the road, as well as sweeping a home-and-home against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who had the best record in the league before those losses.

The Rockets have plenty of players who can score, but it has been their defensive effort that has pushed them to the top tier of championship contenders. Houston has a 108.6 defensive rating, fourth-best in the NBA, and are among the league leaders in preventing points off turnovers and fast-break opportunities. When a team is both tough in half-court sets and doesn’t give up cheap points, that’s coming to lead to success.

While Houston is surging, the Atlanta Hawks are suffering through a five-game losing streak. During that stretch, the Hawks have covered only once – as a 10.5-point underdog in a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on the road Monday – and have averaged just 103.8 ppg on offense.

Injuries have become a huge concern for Atlanta. In last night’s matchup with the Timberwolves, the Hawks played without Trae Young, Dyson Daniels, Bogdan Bogdanović, Jalen Johnson, and others. They’ve also getting a bad break tonight, as this game was originally scheduled for earlier in the season, but had to be moved due to weather conditions, meaning Atlanta won’t be getting a chance to rest its ailing lineup.

Because we’re on the second night of a back-to-back for the Hawks, we won’t be getting a typical injury report from them, which makes it hard to know if they’ll be getting their key players back. The most important of these is Young, who would not only provide a boost in scoring, but would also give rest to Keaton Wallace, who has already played two straight days after moving up from the G-League following a Sunday game.

But even if Young is in the lineup, I like the Rockets in this matchup, as they’ve already proven themselves against far better – and more rested – competition. The news that Young and others may be out of the lineup only make tonight’s line more attractive for bettors. I’m taking Houston to cover, and would stay on this bet even we learn that Atlanta is bringing a relatively complete roster to the court tonight.

Rockets vs Hawks same-game parlay

Rockets -5.5

Under 226.5

Jalen Green 20+ points

Along with picking the Rockets to cover tonight, I’ll also take the Under in my same-game parlay. Each of these teams typically plays below the total set for tonight’s game, and the Hawks haven’t been able to score consistently against anyone lately, let alone a defense as imposing as Houston’s. The Under is the clear play, and even makes a good second straight bet on tonight’s game.

I’ll also take Jalen Green to score at least 20 points tonight. Green has been in a bit of a scoring slump over the last week, but he has still hit the 20+ point mark in 10 of his last 13 games, scoring 25.8 ppg during that period. Against a frankly average Atlanta defense, this is a great opportunity for Green to reassert himself as an elite scorer.

Since joining Covers in 2022, Ed has offered his sports betting analysis primarily on MLB, NFL, college football, and college basketball games, but is willing to take on any sport.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
