The Los Angeles Lakers will finally play again in L.A. after two of their home games were pushed back due to the ongoing wildfires in California, and despite a few extra days off they still look to be one of the better teams in the NBA.
We’ll dive into L.A.’s offensive outburst in my Spurs vs Lakers predictions, and explain why the Spurs will have little hope of a turnaround on that end given their shot chart.
Let’s dig into some NBA player props and hand out some NBA picks on Monday, January 13.
Spurs vs Lakers prediction
My best bet
Lakers -3.5 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
The Los Angeles Lakers are beginning to look like a real basketball team, sustaining a little burst of offense in the middle of December to begin this month ranked eighth in points scored per 100 possessions.
The three-ball has been a large part of why this team has turned things around, sitting Top 10 in the league in January in outside shooting as it begins to launch from outside with more regularity.
I’m a bit scared for the San Antonio Spurs here as they enter with the 10th-worst three-point defense in the NBA this month in what’s been a devastating turnaround from the start of the year. They’ve managed to maintain great numbers in defending the rim but will run into one of the top teams in the league when it comes to scoring in close.
Considering the Spurs have given up plenty of shots in that zone, they’ll be put to the test all night against a trendy offense.
San Antonio, meanwhile, has been dreadful across the board on offense this month and has continued to show little interest in taking shots in close. That’s tough news when you consider the Lakers have been burned all year at the rim or from the mid-range, and with a consistently average 3-point defense they should manage to comfortably win this game over a team that has struggled to shoot over the last few weeks.
On top of the mismatch on both ends, too, the Spurs have tumbled down the ranks in rebounding rate as the Lakers have climbed out of the gutter — so if San Antonio continues to struggle for offense it likely won’t be afforded many second chances.
Spurs vs Lakers same-game parlay
I’m a big fan of Max Christie here with what we’ve laid out above regarding San Antonio’s struggles against the 3. Christie has taken the majority of his shots from outside, and he’s also been excellent at drawing fouls at the rim which is his other preferred shooting area on the floor.
More than this, though, the youngster has become a staple in this rotation in playing over 30 minutes in seven of his last eight games, averaging 32.6 over that span. He’s hit this number in all but one of those contests and did score 11 against the Spurs earlier this year in their only meeting.
Then, I’ll look to exploit what’s still a bad Lakers rebounding team where they’ve been hurt the most. L.A. has allowed the third-most rebounds per game to the small forward position, and while Harrison Barnes’ playing time has dissipated a bit he’s still managed to grab four or more boards in four of his last six games.
He saw the floor for a solid 27 minutes last go around against the Lakers, collecting four boards and should look good to do so again here.
