Spurs vs Pistons Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Spurs Take Battle of Bottom-Feeders

The San Antonio Spurs are in a rare spot as road favorites tonight, but our NBA betting picks believe the line is justified as they visit an ailing Detroit Pistons squad on Wednesday night.

The San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons have combined for a whopping 64 losses already this season, but something’s got to give tonight as the league’s bottom two teams square off.

The gloom continues for the 3-34 Pistons, who’ve lost five in a row since the brief relief of snapping their historic 28-game skid, and they were blown out 131-110 by the Sacramento Kings last night.

The Spurs have been almost as bad, entering with a 5-30 mark and a five-game losing run of their own, but the visitors can at least look to a Victor Wembanyama-led future. Wemby had 24 points and 10 rebounds in Sunday’s narrow loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Spurs vs Pistons predictions

For anyone questioning the Spurs’ desire to pick up wins in a season that’s already heading towards a high draft pick, just take a look at Victor Wembanyama’s pure frustration on his way off the court after the loss in Cleveland.

With the Pistons veering from one disastrous outing to the next, tonight’s battle jumps out as a chance for Wemby and San Antonio to get back in the win column, and I’m a little surprised the line isn’t higher here.

For starters, Detroit is on the second night of a back-to-back set, after scoring 47 points in the first quarter against the Kings last night but still losing by 21 points.

Then there’s Cade Cunningham’s absence, leaving the hosts short on playmaking. That spells trouble against Wembanyama and Devin Vassell, who combined for 46 points over the weekend.

Sure, it’s not comforting that San Antonio has only won once on the road this season, but the visitors finally look more balanced with Tre Jones, a true point guard, in the starting lineup. I like these odds for the Spurs to cash in on their rest advantage and cover a small spread.

My best bet: Spurs -3.5 (-106 at ProLine+)

Spurs -3.5

Over 238.5

I’m picking a high-scoring battle to build out my SGP here. Defense hasn’t been a strong suit for either of these teams this season, and I’m especially bullish about the Spurs posting another impressive total tonight.

They shot 48% against the Cavs on the way to 115 points, and the stage is set for the visitors to shred a Detroit defense that allows 123 points a night. That number has jumped to 128 points per game over the Pistons’ past 10 games.

The hosts have given up at least 120 points in six of their last seven games and have been torched for 131 points in back-to-back games. The quick turnaround here is unlikely to help either.

The Pistons’ offense could be clunky at times tonight, but the trio of Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and Bojan Bogdanovic gives the Pistons enough pop to keep this close.

Spurs vs Pistons spread and Over/Under analysis

The Spurs won’t be favorites many more times this season, but they get that tag tonight with the line set at 3.5. San Antonio has the rest edge and an offense that should thrive with Wembanyama and Vassell in lead roles.

Good luck finding any positive trends for this contest. The Spurs are 1-19 on the road this season, while the Pistons are 2-15 at home. The visitors have covered the spread in their last three contests, though they were double-digit underdogs in all of those.

Still, I see more talent on Gregg Popovich’s roster, including a deeper, more reliable bench. If this turns into a shootout, the visitors have more firepower.

San Antonio has won five of the past seven meetings, with Detroit’s two wins both coming in overtime. But the Spurs haven’t won at Little Caesars Arena since March 2021.

These teams served up a 138-131 scoreline last season, but I don’t expect a repeat of that production tonight. Though the Over is 8-2 in the Pistons’ last 10 outings, the Under has been a winner in three of the Spurs’ last four games.

I’ve made the case for San Antonio to heat up offensively and that should be enough to reach the Over on a total line of 238.5, even with Cunningham’s absence likely to hamper Detroit. The Over is a combined 45-26-1 for these slumping teams this year.
