The Brooklyn Nets dropped their last game to the lowly Wizards, but getting back on track won’t be easy when the Oklahoma City Thunder visit Barclays Center tonight.
My Thunder vs Nets predictions don’t expect many points between two teams that have played excellent defense over the last three weeks.
Read my NBA picks to see why you should take the Under on the point total for this 7:30 p.m. tip on Wednesday, February 26.
Thunder vs Nets prediction
My best bet
Under 217.5 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
Betting the Under on Brooklyn Nets games has been a profitable endeavor lately, so I’m going back to the well. The Nets have hit the Under in 34 of 57 games this season, including in nine of their last 10. Thanks to strong improvements on the defensive end, Brooklyn has won seven of its last 10 games.
In those 10 games, the Nets have held opponents to just 98.8 points per game, the fewest in the Association. The Oklahoma City Thunder sport one of the best offenses in the NBA, but the Nets rank last in pace over the last 10 and first in defensive rating at 105.6.
The Thunder are no slouches on defense, ranking first in defensive rating at 105, and the Thunder sit fifth in that category at 109 over the last 10.
The teams both rank in the Top 10 in fewest points allowed. Over the last 10, the teams have been even stingier, allowing a combined average of just 209.3 points.
Brooklyn may have tightened up on defense, but the offense is a different story. The Nets have scored just 104.8 points per game this season (29th), and over the last 10, those points have fallen to 101.5. The Nets rank in the bottom four on the season and across their last 10 in offensive rating.
As has been the case for the last three weeks, Brooklyn’s recipe for success has been a slow and ugly game, and that should be the plan tonight. The Nets have covered 30 of 57 games this season and seven of their last 10.
I’m tempted to take them at a whopping +17, but the Thunder are the far superior team. At -1600, there’s no money to be made betting OKC on the moneyline. Even in a blowout, the Under could hit, and I’m far more confident in that pick than betting against the spread or taking the Thunder as outright winners.
Thunder vs Nets same-game parlay
Humans are creatures of habit, and I’m not going to break mine of betting on Cameron Johnson to score 15 or Isaiah Hartenstein to cash the Over on his combo prop.
Johnson has scored 15 or more in four straight and 11 of his last 12. He’s reached that mark in 30 of 42 outings including 14 of 19 at home. With Cam Thomas still sidelined, Johnson will operate as Brooklyn’s go-to option on offense. Johnson is questionable with a lower-back contusion, but he hasn’t missed a game since February 4. I’ll bet on him playing, but keep an eye on his status.
Hartenstein’s PRA line has gone way down with Chet Holmgren back in the mix, and I have no problem taking advantage of the dip. Hartenstein has hit the Over on this line in each of his last three played with Holmgren, and he’s averaged 23 PRA in five games played with Holmgren overall. Hartenstein has put up far gaudier numbers on the road (29 PRA) than at home (23.6).
