The Golden State Warriors head to the Toyota Center tonight to take on the Houston Rockets.
Golden State coach Steve Kerr has been noncommittal about playing key veterans on a back-to-back but my Warriors vs Rockets predictions expect them to suit up and cover as road underdogs.
Here are my best free NBA picks for this Western Conference clash on Thursday, February 13 at 8 p.m. ET on TNT.
Warriors vs Rockets prediction
My best bet
Warriors +6 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
It's been an up-and-down season for the Golden State Warriors who are 27-27. However, Draymond Green returned from a two-week absence earlier this month and they added Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline. Since trading for Butler, the Dubs picked up double-digit wins against the Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks before falling short in Dallas last night.
That game against Dallas wrapped up early this morning, giving the Dubs a 2 a.m. flight to Houston and drawing the ire of coach Steve Kerr. Kerr lambasted the scheduling and indicated that he wasn't sure if he'd play veterans Steph Curry, Butler, and Green tonight.
That's why we've seen this spread jump from the Houston Rockets -1 to -6, but until I see a stronger indication that the Warriors will actually rest those players, that number is too steep.
The Rockets are fourth in the West with a 34-20 mark but things haven't looked great lately.
They snapped a six-game losing streak by winning their last two but they are still just 2-7 against the spread in their last nine. Likewise, while the Rockets are 17-8 SU in Houston this season, they are just 9-12 ATS as a home favorite.
Over the last 10 games, the Rockets are just 22nd in the NBA in offensive rating (111.6) while ranking 14th in defensive rating (113.8). That's enough for me to take the points with the visitors here.
Warriors vs Rockets same-game parlay
Despite Kerr hinting that Curry and Butler might be rested today, books have released player props for both stars. That gives us an obvious parlay piece since the Dubs clearly have a much better chance of covering with Butler in the lineup. Butler has scored 20+ points in all three of his games with the Warriors while adding 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
The biggest weakness in the Warriors lineup is at center where Trayce-Jackson Davis has fallen out of the rotation. Second-round rookie Quinten Post is now starting and Kevon Looney's coming off the bench. Regardless of who is playing in the middle out of those three, Rockets center Alperen Sengun will have an appealing matchup.
