The Western Conference is a warzone at the moment as we head for the home stretch, with six teams ranked third through eighth looking to seal their fate for the upcoming postseason. The Golden State Warriors are attempting to avoid the play-in tournament, while the Phoenix Suns are looking to just qualify for the dance.
My Warriors vs. Suns predictions will go over why the shortcomings of Phoenix’s defense, on top of its key injury, should open this one up for a lopsided Warriors win.
Let’s dig into some NBA player props and hand out some NBA picks on Tuesday, April 8.
Warriors vs Suns prediction
My best bet: Warriors -9.5 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
The Phoenix Suns’ offense have not achieved any level of efficiency all season due to their love for the mid-range jumper, and as things stand now they’re even worse. Kevin Durant has been lost to injury, and in the last two weeks they now sit 22nd in points scored per 100 possessions.
That’s a tough reality to face given that the Golden State Warriors rank eighth defensively over the same span, and with things looking even bleaker on defense for this Suns team, the Warriors stand a glorious chance at picking up a huge win with their offense humming.
The Warriors continue to shoot a ton of three-pointers, ranking second in shot frequency outside, and while they’ve ranked just 16th in terms of converting these shots the Suns stand as the worst three-point defense in the league in those aforementioned last 14 days.
Phoenix also sits dead last in defending the rim, which is tough news given the Warriors won’t need any further help there as the fifth-best team in rim shooting.
All in all, this looks like a pretty tough one on paper for the Suns. Even with Devin Booker coming off a 40-point night, the Suns should be bereft of scoring with Golden State doing its best work against the mid-range shots while holding some pretty sizable edges on offense.
This Suns offense hasn’t been one worth believing in all season, and now without Durant things are looking bleak. Back the Warriors to run away with this one.
Warriors vs Suns same-game parlay
The Suns’ defense has allowed the second-most assists per 100 possessions in the past two weeks, and the man I’ll pick out to exploit this trend is Draymond Green. Phoenix has allowed more looks down close to the rim than from the arc, which should mean Green has plenty of the ball and plenty of space to operate.
Green has had a tough run in the assists column with a total of seven over his past two games, but after coming through two tough defenses he should have more than enough juice in this one to get back on track. Prior to his last three, he’d averaged 5.8 assists in his previous five contests and he’s notched seven assists in both games against Phoenix.
Then, we’ll back Jimmy Butler to hit another 3-pointer. He’s hit exactly one in all but one of his last 12 contests and as he’s attempted around three per game over that span he’s a prime target to hit another one against the worst 3-point defense running.
