Clemson vs Virginia Tech Odds, Picks and Predictions: Tigers Claw Back on the Road

Virginia Tech is undefeated at home this season but draws its toughest test yet as Clemson comes to town. The Tigers have hit a bit of a rough patch but are 11-3. As slight favorites, the Tigers will look to put a dent in the Hokies' home record.

Two ACC teams that have recently struggled will meet tonight as the Clemson Tigers take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg.

The Tigers have lost two straight games and three of their last five, including two conference games against Miami and North Carolina. The Hokies have also lost consecutive games, although both were away from home, where they are a perfect 7-0 this season. Will the Hokies be able to stay spotless at home and cover the college basketball odds this week?

Here are our free college basketball picks and predictions for Clemson vs. Virginia Tech on Wednesday, January 10.

Clemson vs Virginia Tech best odds

Clemson vs Virginia Tech picks and predictions

The Clemson Tigers have won three of the last four matchups with the Virginia Tech Hokies, with that one loss coming in overtime in Blacksburg. The Hokies were favored in all four of those games and Clemson covered even in their one loss. Now, Clemson is favored for the first time in this series since February 2019.

While the Hokies are undefeated at home, this is by far their toughest test in Blacksburg. The best opponent before this was Vermont, 126th in the KenPom rankings. Virginia Tech won 73-51 in that game, but now they have Clemson (24th in KenPom).

Clemson is a great offense, ranking 21st in offensive efficiency and 58th in points per game. However, in their last game against North Carolina, the Tigers only scored 55 points and shot a dreadful 1-for-18 from downtown and 36.2% overall from the field. They were also outrebounded 41-28. That is fewer total rebounds than the Tigers average just on the defensive end per game (28.4).

To make matters worse, the Tigers are about to face a Virginia Tech team that loves to slow down the pace. The Hokies rank 349th nationally with only 54.3 field goal attempts per game. They also rank 201st in adjusted tempo and hold opponents to 66.9 points per game (89th). However, the better offenses have found their ways to overcome the deliberate pace and score higher points.

South Carolina (49th in offensive efficiency) tallied 79 against the Hokies, Florida Atlantic (13th) 84, Auburn (ninth) 74, and Wake Forest (24th) 86. Clemson should have no problem converting its shots and bouncing back from a poor shooting performance. The Hokies rank 295th in steals and 255th in blocks per game, so it will just be on the Tigers to make their shots.

Virginia Tech relies heavily on getting to the free throw line and limiting possessions to win their games. The Tigers only commit 16.2 fouls per game (102nd) and typically shoot a fantastic 48.4% from the field (38th). Clemson will use its strengths to take away Virginia Tech’s and give the Hokies their first home loss of the season.

My best bet: Clemson -1.5 (-110 at FanDuel)

Clemson vs Virginia Tech same-game parlay

Clemson -1.5

Over 144.5

With very little in terms of player props available at the time of writing, we will keep our same-game parlay simple.

Starting with the spread, we will combine it with a pick on the total. The Over is 9-5 in Clemson games this season. And while the Under is 8-6 in Virginia Tech's, the Over is 4-3 in the seven games against teams ranked higher than them in KenPom rankings.

Clemson has been held below 72 points twice this season. Meanwhile, its opponents have scored at least 70 six different times. With this total set in the low 140s, there is a great chance that a Clemson win will come with a total Over.

Clemson vs Virginia Tech spread and Over/Under analysis

The Tigers are 8-6 against the spread this season, while the Hokies are 6-8 ATS. These teams have each played Boise State and South Carolina this season. Both defeated Boise State with Clemson winning by 17 points at home and Virginia Tech winning by seven on a neutral site.

Meanwhile, the Tigers defeated South Carolina by five at home and the Hokies lost to the Gamecocks by two on the road. The Tigers do not turn the ball over often and the Hokies do not force many turnovers. That will be a huge advantage for the better-shooting and better-rebounding team in Clemson.

While the Hokies are not typically known for their offense, they do rank 84th in offensive efficiency and have surpassed 70 points in 10 of their 14 games this season. They should be able to score enough to help hit the Over even in a likely losing effort at home.
