Florida Atlantic vs Tulane Odds, Picks and Predictions: Owls Crash and Burn vs Green Wave

The Florida Atlantic Owls have not looked good so far on the road and the Tulane Green Wave are ready to return home, where they've shot lights-out, off a season-worst point output. Our college basketball betting picks are buying low on Tulane's offense.

It’s a college hoops battle in the Big Easy, as the 24th-ranked Florida Atlantic Owls visit the Tulane Green Wave on Thursday night.

Since dumping fourth-ranked Arizona in double overtime, the Owls have been sputtering, with losses in two of their last three. Still, they’ve been pegged as 7-point road favorites in the college basketball odds tonight.

The Green Wave are coming off a loss to North Texas, their first conference loss of the campaign.

Check out my preview for this American Athletic Conference showdown, along with my free college basketball picks and best bet for FAU vs. Tulane on Thursday, January 11.

Florida Atlantic vs Tulane picks and predictions

One of the highest-scoring teams in college basketball, Tulane is coming off its lowest output of the year in a 70-56 loss to the North Texas Mean Green. The team finished a dismal 19-for-51 shooting from the field, just a 37.3% clip for a team that usually shoots it at a Top-10 rate of 50.6%.

That’s sort of been the way they operate: when Tulane loses, it’s ugly. They average 68.6 points per game on 39.5% shooting in defeats, far from the school that ranks 56th in KenPom’s offensive efficiency metric. In their 10 wins, the Green Wave are putting up 94.2 points per game, which would rank first in the NCAA.

Perhaps their wakeup call is against the Owls, who are coming off a 70-68 loss to the 7-7 Charlotte 49ers.

One of the better 3-point shooting teams in the country while hitting at a 36.6% rate (67th), Florida Atlantic could only connect on 5 of 19 attempts from deep against the 49ers. This doesn’t look like the same team that went toe-to-toe with Arizona in a 96-95 2OT win to improve to 10-2 just before Christmas.

A team that’s Top-40 in scoring at 81.9 points per game, FAU has gone sub-70 in two of their last three, averaging 71.6 over that span. Their other loss was to Florida Gulf Coast, a team currently four games under .500.

Tulane is an impressive 8-1 at the Avron B. Fogelman Arena in New Orleans, while the Owls have yet to win on the road this season, albeit over just two games.

I think the Green Wave are catching the Owls at the right time, and I’ll assume that last game’s offensive struggles were a one-off.

My best bet: Tulane +7 (-110 at DraftKings)

Florida Atlantic vs Tulane same-game parlay

Tulane +7

Under 162

We’re going with recent results vs. body of work when choosing our total, the second part of the FAU vs. Tulane SGP.

Yes, these two rank inside the Top-40 in scoring, but they just haven’t been scoring at the clip they had earlier this year.

Florida Atlantic has only had one higher point line all season, 164.5, which they topped. But they did need 10 more overtime minutes to climb there.

That’s the one Over the Owls have hit in their last five games. In the other four, no line was set higher than 148.5 points.

Tulane has gone Under in their last three Division I games, though they also totaled 158 points in a win over Dillard, an NAIA school, to make it four.

Florida Atlantic vs Tulane spread and Over/Under analysis

At one point Wednesday, FAU was as long as a 7.5-point favorite, with some books simultaneously offering a five-point spread. It’s now scrambled everywhere in the middle, with almost all sites offering between 6.5-7.0 points.

The Owls are a solid 9-6-0 against the spread this season, but they have failed to cover in three straight games. The Green Wave are 5-7-1 ATS, though a more respectable 4-4-0 at home.

As for the total, it’s been offered as high as 164.5 points, and hasn’t dropped below 161.5.

Tulane has seen the Over hit in eight of their 13 games this season. This will be the fifth time that one of their games has been set at 160 or more points, with the Green Wave’s O/U record in that sample at 2-2-0.

The Over is just 3-6-1 in Florida Atlantic’s last 10 outings.
