The Marquette Golden Eagles will try to bounce back from an opening loss in Big East play as they host the Georgetown Hoyas in Milwaukee on Friday night.

Marquette (9-3) is ranked sixth in the latest AP Top 25 but was upset 72-57 by the Providence Friars on Tuesday. Georgetown (7-5) has lost three of its last five, including its own Big East opener at the Butler Bulldogs.

The Golden Eagles are a massive favorite in the college basketball odds for this contest, but the Hoyas may feel like they can hang in this contest after watching what Providence did earlier this week. We’ll break down the matchup in our free college basketball picks and predictions for Georgetown vs. Marquette on Friday, December 22.

Georgetown vs Marquette picks and predictions

Marquette may have disappointed against Providence earlier this week, but make no mistake: this Golden Eagles team can play. Head coach Shaka Smart is in his third year with Marquette, and the school is all but a lock to make its third straight NCAA Tournament under him.

After winning the Big East regular season and tournament titles last year, Marquette is back with a team that excels on both ends of the court. The Golden Eagles are averaging 78.3 points per game, with guards Tyler Kolek (15.5 points per game) and Kam Jones (15.4 ppg) leading the way. Defensively, they’re allowing an unremarkable 67.6 ppg, but that has come against one of the tougher schedules in the country.

As a result, the KenPom rankings are high on Marquette, rating the Golden Eagles as a Top 25 team in both adjusted offense and adjusted defense.

Georgetown has gotten by in non-conference play, as the Hoyas have mostly competed against weaker opponents. Yet even in this part of their schedule, they’ve allowed a relatively high 71.6 ppg, with most of the damage usually coming in the second half.

That has shown against their better opponents. Butler scored 74 points against Georgetown on Tuesday, while Syracuse and TCU both put up 80+ points against the Hoyas earlier this month.

Georgetown’s flaws on the defensive end are going to show more and more in Big East play as it consistently matches up against much more talented teams. Opponents are shooting 43.9% against the Hoyas, and they aren’t particularly good on the boards, so they give up plenty of second chances — something they can’t afford to do against the likes of Marquette.

Reality is about to hit hard for Georgetown, and that starts with this trip to Milwaukee. Marquette should outclass this Hoyas squad, and although the spread is huge, I’m picking the Golden Eagles to cover.

My best bet: Marquette -16.5 (-115 at BetMGM)

Kam Jones Over 16.5 points

For tonight’s game, I’m predicting a big Marquette win, and that leads to some clear picks for my SGP.

Along with taking the Golden Eagles on the spread, I’m also backing the Over at 150.5 points. Georgetown has been allowing a ton of points, and Marquette should run up the score enough — perhaps getting to 90+ points — to hit this total.

Most of the scoring will probably come from Marquette’s perimeter threats, including Kam Jones. I’m going to round out this SGP by taking Jones to hit the Over on his scoring prop at 16.5 points. Jones has hit this total five times this season and should add to that tally tonight.

Georgetown vs Marquette spread and Over/Under analysis

Marquette opened tonight’s game as an 18.5-point game. That number has come down across the board, with most books setting the spread at 17.5 points, and some going as low as 16.5 if you shop around.

Neither team has been great against the spread this year. Marquette has put up a middling 5-6-1 ATS mark, while Georgetown has gone 5-7 ATS on the season.

Marquette is undefeated at home this year and will be by far the toughest team Georgetown has faced this season. The Golden Eagles have one of the best offensive units in the country, and the Hoyas are likely to struggle to contain them, especially as depth becomes a factor in the second half. I’m taking Marquette to cover, though I recommend shopping around to get the best number you can, especially given how big the spread is on this game.

The total for this game opened at 149.5 points. That number has increased, with the consensus O/U now sitting at 150.5.

Marquette has largely played below the total this year, with the Under holding an 8-4 edge in its games. Georgetown has been more neutral, with the Over sitting at 6-5-1 when the Hoyas play.

While the Golden Eagles have trended towards the Under, they have surpassed 150.5 points in two of their last four games. They now get a shot at a Georgetown team that hasn’t been able to stop anyone from scoring, let alone a team that has designs on playing deep into March.

This is a fairly hefty total tonight, but I’m still leaning towards the Over.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
