It’s a battle that only a bettor could love, as the Temple Owls, dead last in the American Athletic Conference, visit the Wichita State Shockers, who are 12th out of the 14 teams.

Wichita State picked up a win last time out against Tulsa, just the third such result for the Shockers in the last 16 starts. Still, they’re healthy 6.5-point home favorites Sunday in the college basketball odds

That’s because Temple has had an even worse go of things lately. Its win in the last game against UTSA snapped an ugly 10-game losing skid.

I break down the matchup in my free college basketball picks for Temple vs. Wichita State below.

Temple vs Wichita State picks and predictions

Woeful might be a generous way to describe the Temple Owls offense, which averages 71.2 points per game, a lowly 258th in college basketball, and 11th in the AAC. Their shooting splits aren’t great, shooting 38.7% from the field (359th) and 30% from beyond the arc (335th).

For one game at least, the Owls turned those numbers on their head in an 83-77 win over USTA. Temple shot a sharp 45.3% from the floor, including a very respectable 8-for-21 effort from 3-point range. On the other end, they held the Roadrunners to 42.4% shooting and an especially low 6-for-27 mark from beyond the arc.

The Wichita State Shockers are coming off a 79-63 win over Tulsa, the second-fewest points it's allowed in a conference game this season. The Shockers held Tulsa to just 43.4% shooting from the field, including a woeful 2-for-20 mark from deep. The biggest number, however, was turnovers: Wichita State forced 22 of them, leading to 29 points.

This matchup is the second and final meeting between the schools this season. Temple knocked off the Shockers at home 68-61. Since that win on January 7, the Owls have just one other conference win in 13 tries.

Both teams shot under 40% for the game, but Temple enjoyed a big advantage in 3-point shooting. Their 12-for-37 performance from beyond the arc outscored the Shockers by 32 points, helping offset Wichita State’s +16 advantage in paint points.

While the Shockers have won three of the last four and are 6-4 against Temple over the last 10, the Owls have been the bet against the spread, covering four of the last five and eight of 10.

Wichita State is 9-4 at home, but just 3-4 in conference play. Despite Temple’s struggles, they’ve been given enough points to play with Sunday.

My best bet: Temple +6.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Temple vs Wichita State same-game parlay

Temple +6.5

Under 143

The total is set at 143 points, which is priced correctly, considering these teams combine to average 143.6 points.

However, a closer look at the head-to-head matchups between these schools shows they've only topped this number once in the previous five games — and that includes their game this year, with the sides combining for just 129 points.

Temple vs Wichita State spread and Over/Under analysis

The 6.5-point spread has opened and remained the only number out there late into Saturday night. Both teams have losing records against the spread.

Wichita State has covered just nine of 26 games on the year and has failed to cover three of its last four contests. The Owls are 10-13-2 ATS, helped along by covering four of their last six games.

There’s been just a little movement on the total, which hasn’t gone lower than 141.5 points, with a ceiling that’s currently at 143. Temple is split down the middle, with an O/U record of 12-12-1. The total has alternated between Over and Under in each of its last six contests.

The Shockers have an Under record of 14-12 this season, with the Under hitting in six of their last seven contests. The Over has hit in seven of the last 10 head-to-heads.
