These two new teams are off to horrible starts in SEC conference play, but one of them is set to get their first ever conference win when the Texas Longhorns travel to Norman to take on rival Oklahoma Sooners.
Find out why my Texas vs. Oklahoma predictions see rebounding being an issue for the Sooners as I serve up my college basketball picks for Wednesday, January 15.
Texas vs Oklahoma prediction
My best bet
Arthur Kaluma Over 8.5 rebounds (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
These are two very efficient offenses that also play slow with few possessions per game. That may seem like an automatic reason to avoid taking any rebounding props here. However, there is a big mismatch on the glass that should be taken advantage of, even with fewer opportunities.
The Oklahoma Sooners only average 33.0 rebounds per game, which ranks 321st in the country. They also allow their opponents to get 12.3 offensive boards per game (338th ranked). In total, the Sooners get 48.9% of all rebounding opportunities and that ranks 232nd in the nation.
The Texas Longhorns are not the greatest rebounding team in the country, but they are still solid at hitting the glass defensively and not allowing their opponents to beat them in rebounds. They get 52.1% of all rebounding opportunities, which ranks 90th in the nation.
There are two big rebounders for Texas, but only one has a line for this game and that is big man Arthur Kaluma. He averages 8.2 rebounds per game this season after transferring over from Kansas State. He has recorded at least one offensive rebound in 14 of his 16 games this season and has multiple offensive boards in eight different games.
In games in which he got at least two offensive boards, Kaluma averages 8.8 rebounds per contest. He has surpassed eight rebounds in six games this season and reached double digits in each of the last two games before conference play started. His first three opponents in the SEC were excellent rebounding teams, so the drop off was expected.
Even against the great rebounding teams, Kaluma still averaged 7.0 boards per game in those three contests. Now he gets one of the worst rebounding teams in the country and will take advantage of every opportunity, even if those opportunities are limited by efficient play. I really like his chances to go Over his rebounding total tonight.
Texas vs Oklahoma same-game parlay (SGP)
To go with our best bet, I am going to take the Under in the game total. We talked about how both teams play slow. The Longhorns rank 217th in KenPom’s adjusted tempo and the Sooners rank 198th. Texas only averages 69.4 possessions per game, which ranks 242nd in the country. They also have a very good defense and do not turn the ball over, so it will be difficult for the Sooners to get points without very efficient offense.
Finally, I am going to take an Oklahoma player to go Over on their point total, which will help boost our odds since it does not correlate with our other two plays. Jalon Moore averages 17.4 points per game this season and is their main scorer inside the three-point arc. Texas allows their opponents to get 51.7% of their scoring from inside the three-point line.
