Chris Jones has emerged as one of the NFL's premier defensive players, yet the Chiefs' standout could very well be suiting up for his final game with Kansas City in Super Bowl LVIII. Will the Chiefs opt to retain their star defensive tackle for another season?

Chris Jones' situation at a glance

After missing training camp and Week 1 due to a contract holdout, Chris Jones and the Kansas City Chiefs reworked a one-year deal for 2023.

Jones has taken the torch from Aaron Donald and is thriving as the best defensive tackle in football, coming off two consecutive seasons of 10+ sacks and Pro Football Focus pass rush grades of 90+.

The 29-year-old has also been named first-team All-Pro in consecutive seasons and will command significant money this offseason. Although the Chiefs have the option to place the franchise tag (again) on their star DT, that would come at a cost of more than $30 million in 2024.

Considering Donald (then 31) signed a three-year $95 million extension with the Rams in 2022, Jones should expect offers in a similar range.

With many teams like the Texans, Raiders, and Cardinals flexing an abundance of cap space, the Chiefs will have plenty of competition to retain Jones' services.

Chris Jones' next team favorites

Kansas City Chiefs (-110)

While the Chiefs' defense boasted Top 3 marks in both total yards and points allowed this season, Steve Spagnuolo's unit will drop off a cliff if Jones isn't back with the team next season. Next to Patrick Mahomes, Jones is the most valuable player on the Chiefs and would leave a gaping hole in Kansas City's stop unit.

Although it would be a tough hit to the cap, the Chiefs may be better off mortgaging the future — whether it be via the franchise tag or a long-term deal — and taking advantage of the Mahomes era while the star quarterback is still in his prime.

Houston Texans (+800)

The Houston Texans are set on offense thanks to Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud, and now the rising Texans have the chance to beef up a defense that already features the likes of Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Stingley.

Following a noteworthy run at linebacker for Houston, DeMeco Ryans has emerged as one of the most enticing head coaches to play for. The Texans' front office will have a good chance to sway Jones, boasting more than $60 million in cap space ahead of free agency.

Chris Jones next team odds pick

Kansas City Chiefs (-110)

Although there are a number of teams who have a surplus of cash to throw around this offseason, Kansas City would be stupid to not bring back its defensive leader.

Jones has already expressed his desire to remain a Chief for life, and regardless of Super Bowl LVIII's outcome, the Chiefs will make the right move to remain the class of the AFC next season.
