Eagles vs Cowboys Odds, Picks, and SNF Predictions: Hurts So Good

The NFC East is on the line for all intents and purposes when the Dallas Cowboys host the Philadelphia Eagles in an SNF odds showdown.

The last matchup between these division rivals was drum-tight, with Philly squeaking out a 28-23 home victory in Week 9. Now the series swings to Arlington, where Dallas has defied the NFL odds to win 14 straight games.

The Eagles are coming off an embarrassing loss in Week 13, getting rolled by San Francisco in front of the Philly faithful. The Cowboys, on the other hand, enjoy a 10-day break after a thrilling win over Seattle last Thursday.

I break down the Week 14 odds for Sunday Night Football and give my best NFL picks for Eagles vs. Cowboys on Sunday, December 9.

David Carr said what?!

Jalen Hurts was on the receiving end of one of the worst takes in football history this past week when the NFL Network analyst and former pro QB insisted the Eagles bench their star QB in place of backup Marcus Mariota.

Carr reasoned that the Philadelphia Eagles should opt to rest Hurts, who has been dealing with a knee injury, in preparation for the postseason. I’m sure that zinger made its way back to the Eagles’ locker room, which is prepping for its most important game of the season.

Hurts is coming off a ho-hum performance in the 42-19 loss to the 49ers, but this guy is still a Top 5 QB in the league — banged-up or not. What makes Jalen more dangerous than most of the elite passers on that list is his ability to break off plays with his legs.

He’s rushed for an average of almost 36 yards per game this season, which is right where his rushing yards prop for Sunday Night Football sits: 35.5 Over/Under.

He finished with just 20 yards on seven runs in the loss to the 49ers, landing well below his closing rushing yards total of 45.5 O/U in Week 13. That’s prompted a 10-yard dip in the Week 14 number — an adjustment that isn’t warranted.

Hurts, who has been seeing his number called on more designed runs since the Week 10 bye, rushed only seven times due to the Eagles falling behind so quickly (and left the game briefly for a concussion assessment). Philly runs at the fifth-highest rate in the NFL (45.59%) but only took to the turf on 26.09% of snaps last Sunday, trailing 21-6 early into the second half.

This 35.5-yard rushing total is also the exact number Hurts posted versus the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9, running 10 times for 36 yards and scoring a rushing touchdown.

He faced plenty of pressure from the Cowboys pass rush, which scored three sacks in the loss, and will once again be under duress against Dallas this Sunday night. The Cowboys rank among the most blitz-happy defenses in the land, bringing extra bodies at the seventh-highest rate in the NFL.

Hurts has faced plenty of similar schemes, taking on other blitz-heavy teams like Minnesota, Kansas City, New England, and Tampa Bay. He’s attempted nine or more rushing attempts in those matchups, so the opportunity to top his rushing total will be there for Hurts Sunday night.

Player projections for the Eagles’ stud QB are very positive with every model consulted tabbing Hurts for at least 40 yards on the ground. Some projections called for over 56 yards rushing with my number boiling down to 47 yards.

My best bet: Jalen Hurts Over 35.5 Rushing Yards (-114 at FanDuel)

Eagles vs Cowboys same-game parlay

Jalen Hurts Over 35.5 rushing yards

Jalen Hurts anytime TD

Michael Gallup Over 13.5 receiving yards

Hurts sees his rushing attempts spike versus blitz-heavy teams and will have many chances to top his rushing yards total on SNF.

The “Brotherly Shove” isn’t banned yet. Until it is, Hurts is automatic TD anytime wager.

Michael Gallup has been MIA the past two games but his receiving yard total is too low to pass up. In a game with the highest total on the Week 14 board, there are plenty of passing yards to go around.

Eagles vs Cowboys spread and Over/Under analysis

The look-ahead line for this primetime showcase has Dallas listed as a field goal favorite. But after the Cowboys scored a win on Thursday and the Eagles got embarrassed at home, the official opened of Dallas -3 jumped to -3.5 shortly after post on Sunday night.

As it stands Thursday afternoon, the market consensus is Dallas as a cheaper -3.5 fave. Covers Consensus shows 57% of picks taking the points with the Eagles in Week 14.

Philadelphia’s loss to San Francisco looked bad, but you have to give it a little grace considering the gauntlet the Eagles have been running for the past month. The team faced a horde of Super Bowl contenders and then took on a vengeful 49ers side, which had a rest advantage over the Eagles.

Dallas gets that same leg-up in Week 14, coming off a 10-day mini-bye after a nail-biting win over Seattle at home last week. The Cowboys proved they could beat a winning team but this matchup with Philly is a massive step up — especially in terms of defensive opposition.

The Cowboys are a much different offense inside AT&T Stadium, however. While Dallas averages less than 24 points on the road — including 23 points off 406 yards at Philadelphia in Week 9 — it lights up that giant scoreboard in Jerry’s World with a league-high 41 points per homestand.

This Week 14 total is the tallest Over/Under on the board and just the 11th total of the 2023 season to sit at 50 points or more. Those taller totals have finished 2-8 O/U. Oddsmakers opened the number at 50 points on Sunday night and it has jumped to as high as 53 points before buyback on the Under settled the total to 51.5 O/U.

The Cowboys and Eagles topped the 46.5-point total in Week 9 and have gone Over the number in each of their last six head-to-head games.

Dallas is 8-4 O/U on the year with a 5-1 O/U count in Arlington while Philadelphia owns a 7-5 O/U record, including going 2-4 O/U as a visitor.
