Bruins vs Devils Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Boston Can't Keep Up with New Jersey

The Devils are winners in six of eight after going through a rough patch last month and now play host to a shorthanded Boston side. With New Jersey catching fire as of late, our NHL picks are siding with the home team to pick up two points.

The Boston Bruins visit the New Jersey Devils in the marquee matchup of Wednesday’s five-game slate, as the pair of contenders in the Stanley Cup odds hit the ice at the Prudential Center.

Boston has exceeded expectations out of the gate and sits alone atop the Atlantic Division. Meanwhile, the Devils sit sixth in the Metropolitan Division after having to battle through a slew of injuries in mid-November.

Entering Wednesday’s matchup, though, it’s the B's set to be without multiple key players and New Jersey who is on a 6-2-0 stretch. The change in momentum has N.J. labeled as a short home favorite in the NHL odds

Here are my free NHL picks for the Bruins vs. Devils matchup on Wednesday, December 13.

Bruins vs Devils odds

Bruins vs Devils predictions

The Boston Bruins ruled out top-six center Pavel Zacha (upper body) and No. 1 defenseman Charlie McAvoy (upper body) on Tuesday for this matchup, and the moneyline odds have moved in the New Jersey Devils direction as a result.

I already had Boston pegged as a paper contender, and these absences will further expose an already thin roster.

The Bruins have leaned heavily on their third-ranked .934 five-on-five team save percentage, while failing to drive possession with a 23rd-ranked 48.8 Corsi For percentage. It’s the opposite for New Jersey — which boasts a fifth-ranked 55.4 CF% — but its .896 team SV% at 5-on-5 is second last.

I expect there to be statistical correction ahead in net for the Devils and it has already begun with them posting a .906 mark during the noted eight-game heater.

Where I think the rubber meets the road Wednesday, though, is the huge uptick in class New Jersey represents compared to Boston’s recent run of opponents. The Bruins have faced the Blue Jackets (twice), Sharks, Sabres, and Coyotes in five of their past six.

Not exactly a who's who of championship-caliber clubs.

The Devils bring a deep and relentless attack, and I don’t anticipate the B's keeping pace for 60 minutes. And, relying on elite goaltending night in and night out is going to catch up to Boston.

Finally, I also value that this moneyline has moved to -125 at multiple sportsbooks, which further supports the small edge in my numbers.

Bruins vs Devils same-game parlay

Devils moneyline

Jack Hughes 4+ shots

Hampus Lindholm Under 0.5 points

30% boost available

I have Jack Hughes projected for 4.43 shots and would price him to record at least four shots at -238. Similarly, I’d price Hampus Lindholm at -192 to miss the scoresheet on Wednesday based on a projection of 0.45 points.

Hughes has recorded at least four shots in eight consecutive games and 10 of 11 since returning from a shoulder injury on November 18, while Lindholm has only registered seven points across 26 games all season.

It’s worth noting that my true odds for all three legs of this same-game parlay would be +292.

Bruins vs Devils moneyline and Over/Under analysis

As noted, there has been movement to the New Jersey moneyline since Tuesday. However, I suspect oddsmakers will be happy to keep the number in the Devils -120 to -125 range. There has been buyback on the Boston side at multiple shops, and the price has fluctuated since opening as low as New Jersey -110 at some shops.

The total has also seen several adjustments, with the number moving between 6.0 and 6.5. Additionally, there has been consistent and consensus juice to the Over 6.0 and Under 6.5.
