There’s been a noticeable uptick in shots and attempts from Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield recently. He’s positioned to be busy again Monday with the Anaheim Ducks a favorable opponent and allowing the fourth-most shots per game to opposing wingers.
Caufield has turned his 48 attempts into 29 shots in the past seven games, and he’s recorded 4+ shots four times during the stretch.
The surge aligns with Caufield returning to the No. 1 line with Nick Suzuki, as the long-time linemates have a proven track record of driving possession with a respectable 50.1 Corsi For percentage and 51.4% shot share at 5-on-5 over 1251:54 of shared ice time over the past two seasons.
For comparison, Caufield has respective 40.5% and 40.3% marks when he hasn’t jumped the boards with Suzuki.
The duo has also benefited from winger Alex Newhook joining them on the top line. Newhook slotted in with Suzuki and Caufield halfway through the 6-2 loss to the Golden Knights on November 23, and the trio has been rolling ever since. They’ve clicked for an elite 62.8 CF% and 60.2% shot share over the past eight games.
In addition to Anaheim surrendering plenty of shots to opposing wingers, the Ducks also rank 30th with a 45.3 CF% at 5-on-5 while allowing a league-high 33.3 shots per game overall.
