The Vancouver Canucks get set to host the Colorado Avalanche at Rogers Arena, and the NHL odds list Colorado as a -133 favorite.

Vancouver won the lone matchup between these two teams earlier this season as a similar +128 underdog, and I expect a similar result tonight in my Avalanche vs. Canucks predictions.

Read on for my NHL picks for February 4.

My Canucks analysis
The Vancouver Canucks present a challenging matchup for the Colorado Avalanche, which explains why they won the first meeting and why I believe they will do so again. Colorado’s greatest strength is its offense, but Vancouver’s strong defensive play can slow the Avs down.

The Canucks rank sixth in the league in xGA/60. As a result, goaltender Kevin Lankinen has thrived behind this efficient blue line. Lankinen is 18-8-7 through 33 appearances in the crease this season with a .904 SV% and 2.57 GAA.

If Vancouver and Lankinen can slow down the Avalanche’s offense, the Canucks could win as underdogs once again. Another reason to back Vancouver is that its lackluster offense could find success against Colorado’s inefficient defensive play.

Entering this matchup, the Avs rank in the bottom half of the league in xGA/60.

The main concern with taking Vancouver’s moneyline in this spot is that star defenseman Quinn Hughes is questionable with an undisclosed injury. With that said, if oddsmakers didn’t expect him to play, the Canucks would likely have even longer odds than +120 on the moneyline.

Canucks vs Avalanche odds analysis

Colorado opened as a -131 favorite and has since moved to -133. I believe this slight line movement is due to Hughes’ questionable status, but again, the Avs would not be this small of a favorite if he was not expected to play.

The total opened at 5.5 and hasn’t moved. The juice is on the Over, and since this number won’t drop to five, the only direction for this line to move is up.
