The New Jersey Devils travel to meet the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Tuesday night. It’s the third meeting out of four scheduled for the regular season.

Carolina won the first meeting in Raleigh by a 4-1 score on December 20, and followed that up with a wild 5-4 victory in a shootout on New Year’s Day in Newark.

New Jersey has steadied the ship with a pair of wins in the past three outings since that last encounter with Carolina. Meanwhile, Carolina has struggled a bit, picking up just one point in the previous three outings.

Can the Hurricanes maintain their mastery of the Devils, especially in Raleigh, or will New Jersey finally be able to bedevil the Canes? We’ll discuss in our NHL picks and predictions for Devils vs. Hurricanes on Tuesday, January 10.

Devils vs Hurricanes best odds

Devils vs Hurricanes picks and predictions

The Devils have managed a 3-1-1 record across the past five games overall, including an impressive 4-2 win on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a 4-3 overtime win over the visiting New York Rangers last time out.

New Jersey was red-hot to start the season, then had an ugly stretch in the middle of December, including a 4-1 loss in Raleigh in its first visit to North Carolina, but it has picked up the pace once more.

Meanwhile, Carolina has fallen apart a little bit on defense and in the crease. The Hurricanes used a combination of tremendous offense, timely goals on the power play, good defense, penalty killing, and solid goaltending to rattle off a franchise-record 11 consecutive wins and 17 straight games with at least one point. However, things haven’t gone their way lately.

The Hurricanes are just 0-2-1 in the past three games, averaging 3.0 goals per game in the previous three outings, while allowing 4.7 gpg.

While those numbers are ugly, it’s just a small snapshot. Overall, the Under has been the rule for Carolina, especially on home ice, going 8-3 in the past 11 at PNC Arena. And the Devils also are defense-first, and New Jersey has gotten tremendous tending lately from Vitek Vanecek.

In other words, we’re not going to have fire-wagon hockey in Raleigh on Tuesday. The Hurricanes will be better on home ice, and the Devils will continue getting solid goaltending. Goals will be at a premium.

Devils vs Hurricanes moneyline analysis

The Devils cashed on the puck line as the underdog last time out against the Hurricanes in Newark on New Year’s Day, and New Jersey is a healthy 3-1 in the past four on the puck line as an underdog since December 21.

However, playing road underdogs on the puck line can be a little expensive, so if you like New Jersey, just play it straight up.

Carolina has been favored in each of the previous two meetings with New Jersey, and it has cashed in each outing. However, the Hurricanes have been atrocious lately, failing to cover each of the past three outings as a favorite.

What was working for Carolina before — good D, solid goaltending, and a strong penalty kill — is not working in the three-game mini skid. This team has coughed up 18 total goals in the past four outings, including six power-play goals in the past three affairs.

The discipline for Carolina has gone out the window, and until it gets it back, fade the Hurricanes. Vanecek (15-5-2, 2.34 GAA, .914 SV%) is on a roll lately, too, and he will make it very hard for the Carolina offense to get back on track.

Similar to how Nashville’s Juuse Saros turned back everything Carolina threw at him Thursday, expect Vanecek to frustrate this team, too.

Devils vs Hurricanes Over/Under analysis

While it wasn’t the case on New Year’s Day, a game that featured nine total goals, we usually see a lot of defense with few goals when these teams get together.

That was the case in the most recent meeting in Raleigh, as Carolina skated away with a 4-1 win on December 20. In that contest, we didn’t have any power-play goals for either side, although Teuvo Teravainen did strike for an empty-net goal.

The Under is 3-0-1 in the past four games on the road for the Devils, while going 13-6-1 in the past 20 games against Eastern Conference teams. In addition, New Jersey is rested, and that’s also good for the Under. In the past 10 games when playing on two days of rest, the Devils have cashed the Under at a 7-3 clip.

While the Over has hit lately for Carolina during its mini skid, the Under is the dominant trend overall. The Under is 8-3 in the past 11 games on home ice, and a return to Raleigh in front of their boisterous fans should get the Canes untracked.

The Devils on the money line plus an Under play makes for a potentially lucrative payday.
