The Dallas Stars host the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday night in a battle between two of the top teams in the Western Conference.
My Golden Knights vs. Stars predictions see a tight, low-scoring affair in the cards, which is usually the case when these two sides square off.
Let’s take a closer look with my January 24 NHL picks.
Golden Knights vs Stars prediction
My best bet
Under 6 (-109 at Pinnacle)
My analysis
The Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars are both heavy teams that defend well and play with a lot of structure. They also take a slower, more methodical approach to generating offense, and there generally aren't fireworks between them as a result.
The two sides have met eight times dating back to last year’s playoffs in April. Of those eight meetings, only one featured more than six goals, while another game came in at exactly six. Tonight’s total of 6.0 would own a 6-1-1 record to the Under over the last eight matchups.
I expect that trend to continue this time around, especially with only two of Dallas’ last 10 games going Over the number. Normally a team very reliant on defense and Jake Oettinger, the Stars are leaning even heavier in that direction due to some key injuries up front.
With Tyler Seguin and Mason Marchment out of the lineup, the team doesn’t have the same scoring depth, which is impacting its offense. Dallas has scored two or fewer goals in regulation in five of its past 10.
Meanwhile, the Golden Knights started Ilya Samsonov on Thursday, opting to keep starter Adin Hill available for this heavyweight matchup.
Hill has saved 6.4 goals above expected this season, sandwiching him between Jake Oettinger and Andrei Vasilevskiy. He’s hardly a free pass for Dallas.
On the flip side, the Golden Knights haven’t been nearly as potent on the road. They’ve won 12 of 23 games (compared to 18 of 25 at home) and haven’t scored at as high of a rate.
In the latter half of a road back-to-back against a very good Stars team, the Knights will be looking to squeeze the pace out of this game and play a tighter, lower-event affair
Golden Knights vs Stars same-game parlay (SGP)
The Stars are a force on home soil. They own a sparkling 17-7-1 record in their own building and have held their opponents to 2.18 goals per game — fewer than all but the Kings and Jets.
They are a very structured team, and at home, they can get studs like Miro Heiskanen out against the opposing team’s top weapons to take them out of the game almost completely.
He will no doubt be tasked with slowing down Jack Eichel and Mark Stone in this one. If and when they are able to grind out opportunities, Oettinger will be there to close the door.
Jamie Benn has been extremely productive on home soil, hitting the scoresheet in 68% of Dallas’ home games to date.
He is in the midst of a season-long five-game point drought. I think the captain is going to snap out of it in a big clash against a Western Conference powerhouse.
