Latest NHL Picks

We have a busy NHL slate today on the Friday after American Thanksgiving, including an Original Six afternoon affair between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks were victorious earlier in the season when these two met on October 19 with a 4-1 win in Toronto, but the NHL odds suggest Toronto should roll with ease today and keep their winning streak alive.

Maple Leafs vs Blackhawks predictions

The Maple Leafs enter this afternoon’s matchup on a four-game winning streak, while Chicago looks to end a five-game losing skid.

The Blackhawks are in turmoil on and off the ice as Taylor Hall was just declared out for the season with a knee injury, while a weird situation seems to be brewing with Corey Perry, who missed practice and is not expected to play today. Look for Toronto to take advantage of an undermanned and far inferior opponent.

The Hawks surrender an average of 33.1 shots on goal per game (29th) while giving up the second-most scoring chances and high-danger chances in the league, according to Natural Stat Trick. It goes hand-in-hand with their second-worst expected goal differential, allowing 3.7 goals against per game.

This should have Toronto playmakers licking their chops as the league’s seventh-best offense with two players in the Top 10 in goals this season.

Arvid Soderblom will get the start for Chicago after registering a 35-save win against the Leafs back in October. Since that game, however, the Hawks netminder is 0-5 with an .845 SV% and a 4.85 GAA. I think that goalie is more likely to show up here than the one we saw earlier in the season.

As for the other side of the ice, Toronto is expected to start Ilya Samsonov, who has allowed just two goals in three of his last four starts. That’s the same amount of goals the Hawks offense has been limited to in three of their last four games. Outside of Connor Bedard, Chicago doesn’t really have anyone too threatening offensively now that Hall is out for the season.

Additionally, the Leafs have a strong advantage in the special teams department. Toronto has a Top 5 power play going up against Chicago’s 76% penalty kill. Sure, the Leafs PK has been brutal this year (75%), yet they still somehow have an edge against a Hawks man-advantage that has converted on just 10% of their opportunities (30th in the NHL).

Toronto has a strong advantage offensively, defensively, between the pipes, and on special teams. The Leafs should roll into Chicago and lay a beating on the Hawks with a multi-goal victory.

My best bet: Maple Leafs -1.5 (-105 at SIA)

Maple Leafs vs Blackhawks same-game parlay

Maple Leafs -1.5

William Nylander anytime goal

Maple Leafs team total Over 3.5

For Leg 1 of my same-game parlay, we’ll stick with my best bet and take the Leafs on the puck line of -1.5. They are the overwhelmingly better team, and the Hawks have been awful at home, covering the puck line in just two of six attempts this year.

Next up, I like a William Nylander anytime goal prop. He’s got nine goals in 12 games, with at least one point in all but one of the 12 times he’s faced Chicago. He’s got a five-game goal-scoring streak in play, along with a 17-game point streak. He’ll be looking to extend both of those, and I think he does it by getting one past Soderblom.

For the final leg of my parlay, I’ll look for the Leafs to score Over 3.5 goals. Toronto is averaging 3.53 goals per game on the road, while the Hawks have allowed four or more in four of their last five games. Soderblom may have got the best of Toronto last month, but I expect Toronto to win this battle handily.

Maple Leafs vs Blackhawks moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Toronto Maple Leafs are large favorites in this game at -250 odds, with the Hawks coming in as +200 underdogs. The public is leaning heavily on Toronto with them accumulating 79% of the bets. At -250 odds, however, there isn’t much value in taking the Leafs here, so maybe consider the spread instead.

The total for this game is currently set at 6.5 goals. The Over is favored at -120 odds, while the Under gives you even money (+100). I don’t have a strong feeling either way on the total today, but the money is coming in on the Over with 67% of the handle.

Traditionally, we see a lot of goals in this matchup, with the Over hitting in seven of the last nine matchups. However, those goal fests were in the Patrick Kane era, where these two teams could go back and forth with each other.
