Maple Leafs vs Hurricanes Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Carolina Power Play Makes a Difference

The Maple Leafs penalty kill has been lost at sea without Mitch Marner, and in a tough circumstance vs. a solid Hurricanes power play, our NHL betting picks are backing a Carolina power-play point prop tonight.

We’ve got 11 games on the NHL betting slate tonight, including a marquee matchup between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes.

The NHL odds suggest Carolina should win the game, and I think it will be their power play that puts them over the top.

Maple Leafs vs Hurricanes predictions

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes face off for the third and final time in the regular season tonight in Raleigh, NC.

Both clubs enter tonight on an upward trend, as the Canes have won eight of their last 10 games, while the Leafs have had a couple of dominant wins against Washington on Wednesday and Edmonton last night.

Despite winning those games, however, the penalty kill still struggled. It was victimized in both games and has been scored on repeatedly since Mitch Marner left the lineup due to injury seven games ago. Over that stretch, the Leafs’ PK is a lowly 64%, allowing at least one goal in six of those games while giving up nine in total.

Let’s continue to fade the Leafs penalty kill and look for some good value for the Hurricanes on the man advantage.

The Canes power play has been the difference between a win or a loss so far in the two meetings against Toronto this season, where the PP unit scored four times on nine opportunities in both one-goal wins. It also helps that Carolina’s power play has scored five times over its last five games, for a success rate of 38.5%.

So which Hurricanes player gives us the best chance and best value in tonight’s game on the power play? After some digging, I’m finding that newcomer Jake Guentzel may be the best play here tonight on his power-play points total (0.5).

Guentzel spent most of the year on a struggling Penguins power play but quickly found some chemistry in Carolina. He has 11 total points in seven games with Carolina, with three of them coming on the man-advantage. Those three points happen to lead the team over this five-game stretch.

Additionally, the Leafs just played a tough Edmonton team where they allowed two goals on the man advantage last night. Toronto then traveled to Carolina overnight for a 6 p.m. start time. So they now have to deal with cross-border travel and an early puck-drop. That could lead to sloppy play and tired legs later in the game, which could result in an uptick in penalties throughout the game and give Guentzel ample opportunity to record a power-play point.

My best bet: Jake Guentzel Over 0.5 power-play points (+210 at SIA)

Maple Leafs vs Hurricanes same-game parlay

Auston Matthews anytime goal

Maple Leafs +1.5

Over 5.5

For Leg 1 of my same-game parlay, we’ll roll with an anytime goal from Auston Matthews. It’s been a very prosperous bet this season, as he’s still on the hunt for 70 goals. He’s now scored in back-to-back games here, with three in the past two games. He also has six goals in his last seven games against the Hurricanes.

Next up, I’ll take the underdog Maple Leafs on the spread. Toronto’s record has not been very good against the spread, but most of that is due to them being the favorites in most games. Road dogs are covering the spread at a 60% clip this season. Additionally, both matchups this season have been decided by a single goal, and I expect another tight one tonight. The spread gives us the leeway of a one-goal Leafs loss or a win of any kind.

For my final leg, I’ll take Over 5.5 goals to be scored tonight. Both teams average over three goals per game on the season and have scored two or more in 17 of their last 20 games combined. Both sides have scored at least two goals in eight of the last 10 meetings against each other.

Maple Leafs vs Hurricanes moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Maple Leafs come into tonight as the road dogs at +145 odds, with the Hurricanes getting -175 odds as the home favorites. The Leafs are playing on the second night of a back-to-back with cross-border travel, which already puts them at a disadvantage. Add in the injuries to Toronto with Marner and Calle Jarnkrok out, along with Tyler Bertuzzi and Ilya Lyubushkin as game-time decisions, and the Canes have a solid chance to sweep the season series.

The total for tonight’s game is set at 6.5, shaded toward the Under at -115 with the Over at -105 odds. The total split the sides in the first two meetings this season, but has hit the Over at a 60% clip over the last 10 games between the Leafs and Canes, including three of the last four games. I’d lean toward the Over as well.
