The Edmonton Oilers host the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Place on Friday, January 3, and the Oilers are looking to avenge being upset by the Ducks on the road Sunday.

Edmonton superstar Connor McDavid headlines my Ducks vs. Oilers predictions, and my NHL picks are expecting No. 97 to pile up shots against Anaheim tonight.

My Oilers analysis

Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid has seen his shot volume plummet in recent weeks, and he’s only recorded four or more shots once across his past 12 games.

The offensive numbers are still sterling, with his 23 points – three goals – during the heater tied for third in the league.

A dip in shooting efficiency and weaker possession numbers are the primary reasons for McDavid’s decline in the shots column.

He’s converted just 21 of his 46 attempts into shots (45.7%) over the recent 12-game stretch with a 56.6 Corsi For percentage and 55.2% shot share at five-on-five compared to respective 56.1%, 61.9% and 60.2% ratios to start the year.

I’m expecting the pendulum to swing back tonight because the Anaheim Ducks are the perfect opponent to kick-start the positive regression for McDavid’s shot volume.

After all, Anaheim is playing its second road game in consecutive nights and has allowed the second-most shots per game (31.9).

Add the Ducks surrendering the fourth-most shots per game to opposing centers (11.7) and sporting a 30th-ranked 46.1 CF% at 5-on-5, and No. 97 is positioned for the highlighted pending statistical correction to cash in tonight.

Of course, McDavid is also in the 93rd percentile of NHL forwards in shots on goal and the 98th percentile of offensive-zone time at even strength.

Oilers vs Ducks same-game parlay (SGP)

Oilers -1.5 puck line

Connor McDavid Over 3.5 shots

Leon Draisaitl Over 2.5 shots

Anaheim just topped Edmonton 5-3 at the Honda Center on Sunday, so I’m not anticipating the Oil allowing the Ducks to make it two in a row. Edmonton is a far superior team in all facets, and I particularly value the high-end play during their active 16-5-2 stretch.

The Oilers are inside the Top 10 in each of CF%, goals percentage and expected goals percentage at 5-on-5 during the run, while also sporting a fifth-ranked 27.9 power-play percentage and top-ranked 90.0 penalty-kill percentage.

Turning to Edmonton center Leon Draisaitl, he’s recorded three or more shots in 22 of 37 games, including seven of his past 10. Draisaitl paces the Oilers in shots (113) and also impressively ranks in the 95th percentile in shots on goal among NHL forwards and the 96th percentile in offensive-zone time at even strength.
