Rivalries will renew Saturday night as the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers face off in a high-stakes Battle of Alberta.
The Flames are fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive while the Oilers are jockeying for position in the Pacific Division standings.
My Flames vs. Oilers predictions see superstar Leon Draisaitl picking up where he left off in his expected return to the lineup.
Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for March 29.
Oilers vs Flames prediction
My Oilers pick: Leon Draisaitl anytime goal (+115 at BET99)
My Oilers analysis
Leon Draisaitl is expected to return to the lineup after sitting on the sidelines since March 18. Despite his time away, Draisaitl still comfortably leads the league in scoring with 49 goals.
William Nylander (42) is the only other player remotely in the ballpark.
He returns to action in the midst of a two-game goal drought. While that is absolutely nothing to most players, Draisaitl is not like most players. He has only gone more than two games in between goals once the entire season.
Keeping him off the board for a night or two is a serious challenge – Draisaitl has goals in 59% of his games – and it has proven almost impossible for teams to hold him down longer than that.
Following 10 days off, Draisaitl will undoubtedly have some extra pep in his step. He’s had time to heal some bumps and bruises and rejuvenate for the stretch drive.
The Edmonton Oilers badly need him, too. They’ve dropped back-to-back games and desperately need to get back in the win column as they duke it out with Los Angeles for home ice in their 1st round series.
The Oilers are still without Connor McDavid as well, putting even more of the load on Draisaitl’s shoulders.
That hasn’t been a burden to him in the past. Draisaitl scored five goals over six games without McDavid earlier this year, including against these same Calgary Flames.
Calgary is not nearly as effective in keeping pucks out of their net on the road, and they’ve played very fast-paced, high-event hockey of late, which should create a good game environment for Draisaitl to make noise offensively.
Look for him to hit the ground running and find twine in his return.
Oilers vs Flames same-game parlay (SGP)
Evan Bouchard is an assist machine, especially when playing on home soil. He’s picked up an apple in nine of his last 10 games and has tallied 22 over his last 30 in Edmonton. Incredible stuff.
With Draisaitl expected back in the lineup, Bouchard has the ability to once again feed pucks to the most productive goal scorer in the NHL at 5v5 as well as on the No. 1 power-play unit.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is generally thought of more as a playmaker than a shooter but his volume has really seen an uptick without McDavid.
RNH has recorded at least three shots in six of the last seven without the captain, including each of the last five.
He sees a little extra ice time and is relied upon in a more prominent offensive role. Clearly, he’s capable of taking advantage.
