Oilers vs Penguins Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Edmonton Oilers are massively overdue for positive regression on offense, and that'll come against a Pittsburgh Penguins team that couldn't stop a beach ball.

The Pittsburgh Penguins suck on defense, and the Edmonton Oilers can’t buy a goal.

My Penguins vs. Oilers predictions believe the Oil will break through offensively tonight and take care of business in regulation.

Read about it in my NHL picks for Friday, October 25.

My Oilers analysis

The Pittsburgh Penguins arriving at Rogers Place couldn’t come at a better time for the struggling Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers are in the midst of a horrible stretch of puck luck to open the season, and there’s too much talent jumping the boards for the scoring drought to continue. Edmonton has serious statistical correction ahead, with its 5-on-5 offensive numbers way below last year’s marks.

Statistic 2023-24 2024-25
CF% 55.2% 58.1%
G/60 2.9 1.57
xG/60 3.19 3.01
xGF% 57.1% 55.4%
HDSC/60 14.6 12.73
Team shooting percentage 8.81 4.81

Of course, there are also the power-play woes. Edmonton posted a fourth-ranked 26.3 power-play percentage last year, so I expect positive regression ahead of this year’s unsustainably low 10.5 PP%.

Returning to the Pens, they’ve allowed the second-most goals per game (4.25) and haven’t been good at 5-on-5 while allowing the third-most goals per 60 (3.73) and fifth-most expected goals per 60 (3.06).

Oilers vs Penguins same-game parlay (SGP)

Oilers -1.5 puck line

Viktor Arvidsson Over 0.5 points

Zach Hyman Over 3.5 shots

The Oilers gifted winger Viktor Arvidsson a top-six gig and power-play time, and he’s failed to record a point through seven games. Arvidsson is penciled into a role on the No. 1 power-play unit, and he projects to continue skating with star center Leon Draisaitl at 5-on-5.

With the highlighted defensive shortcomings of the Penguins, Arvidsson is set up for a slump-busting night.

The first-year Oiler has been on the ice for a solid 3.1 expected goals per 60 at 5-on-5, but like the entire team, it’s only translated to 1.31 actual goals per 60, and Edmonton has a team shooting percentage of just 3.6%.

Zach Hyman has seen his shots per 60 at 5-on-5 plummet to 6.41 this year after posting a 10.31 mark last season. His 18.65 attempts per 60 are right in line with last year’s 18.1, so I expect his efficiency to even out sooner than later.

In addition to allowing goals in bunches, the Pens allow the fourth-most shots per game (33.3). I also value Hyman sporting a dominant 61.7 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5.
