Best NHL Player Prop Bets Today, March 7: Mercer Makes Most of New Opportunity

The Jack Hughes injury will hurt the Devils quite a bit, but that will give guys like Dawson Mercer a chance to step up. Our NHL player prop picks see Mercer tallying at least two shots on goal.

It’s NHL trade deadline day and there are a lot of things to navigate. I’m playing it safe and fading some sellers while sticking with players whose opportunities should remain the same by 3:01 p.m. ET today.

These are my three favorite NHL player props for Friday, March 7.

NHL player prop bets today

Best NHL player prop bets for March 7

Noah Hanifin Over 0.5 assists (+140 at bet365)

Noah Hanifin is still running the top power play in Vegas with Shea Theodore out. He has multi-point games in three straight matches and will continue to get big minutes and offensive opportunities today vs. a Pittsburgh Penguins team that is waving the white flag.

Pittsburgh has already sold pieces, including Anthony Beauvillier today for a surprising second-round pick. They could be shipping out more pieces and might have a skeleton crew of a lineup tonight in Vegas.

Vegas is going to be a problem down the stretch and this power play has been hot and faces a Bottom 5 penalty kill over the last 30 days.

This price should be at +110. This is a good spot for an assist ladder with two assists paying +750 at bet365

Dawson Mercer Over 1.5 SOG (-110 at bet365)

The New Jersey Devils are in a very different situation than last week without Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton. It was a team already lacking depth at forward but with the way the lines have been rearranged, it is putting center Dawson Mercer in a better shooting role than a week ago.

When Hughes was in the lineup, Mercer was playing with Timo Meier and Nico Hischier. He was just a complimentary piece to that line as Hischier drove the offense and Meier was the shooter. Now he is playing with Ondrej Palat and Tomas Tatar.

It’s not a line with a lot of talent, but it turns Mercer into more of a shooter where he had four SOG last game, and that includes just 36 seconds on his new role with the first power play. He also played 20 minutes, which is up over two minutes vs. his season average.

He will have shooting opportunities and just two on net at this price is a low risk. His three SOG is paying +290 with four SOG +800.

Barrett Hayton + Dylan Guenther Over 0.5 points each (+174 at DraftKings)

Utah might be on the second game of a back-to-back, but it’s vs. the Chicago Blackhawks who could be selling pieces later this afternoon.

Barrett Hayton has been a much better center now that he has Dylan Guenther on his wing while also playing on a really good PP1. Guenther has pointed in eight of his 10 games since returning to the lineup and I always like second-line players on the road as they get the better matchups with the home team and send out their best vs. the top line.

Spencer Knight is getting the start for the Hawks but asking him to stop 41 of 42 again is a lot. His advanced metrics have him as a Top-10 goalie, but Chicago is one of the worst teams in terms of expected goals allowed in hockey and that roster might be even weaker today.

With Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz paying +115 for a point each, I’d prefer this second line who cashed this prop yesterday at +200 vs. Detroit. The 30-point drop is still worth it and is heavily priced that way due to the matchup, but I’d play this to +150 tonight vs. Chicago.
