Alex Ovechkin Over 0.5 goals scored (-115 at FanDuel)
History could be made Sunday as the New York Islanders host the Washington Capitals on TNT. Alex Ovechkin looks to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, something that seems increasingly likely given New York’s recent defensive woes.
Over the past two months, the Islanders rank 28th in the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). Backing up this defense is goaltender Ilya Sorokin, who has struggled with the play in front of him.
Sorokin has surrendered three or more goals in four of his past five starts, posting a .878 SV% and 3.17 GAA during that stretch.
New York also struggles on special teams, ranking 29th in penalty-kill percentage. That’s great news for Ovechkin, who leads Washington in power-play goals.
Tage Thompson Over 0.5 goals scored (+145 at FanDuel)
Later in the evening, the Buffalo Sabres host the Boston Bruins. Goaltender Joonas Korpisalo is slated to start for Boston, and he projects as a strong fade candidate.
Through 25 appearances this season, Korpisalo is 10-9-3 with an .893 SV%. That brings us to Buffalo’s Tage Thompson, who has been on fire.
Thompson has scored six goals over the past six games and leads the Sabres with 40 goals. That success is likely to continue against Boston, a team he has scored four goals against in the past four meetings.
Alex Tuch Over 0.5 goals scored (+190 at FanDuel)
I also want to back Thompson’s teammate, Alex Tuch, to find the back of the net in this matchup. The thinking here is simple: we’re guaranteed a profit if either Thompson or Tuch scores, and if both score, all the better for my NHL picks.
Thompson and Tuch skate together on the first power-play unit, which should see plenty of opportunities as Boston ranks 31st in penalty minutes per game. Not only do the Bruins take frequent penalties, but they also struggle to kill them, ranking 22nd in penalty-kill percentage.
That’s good news for Thompson and Tuch, who have combined for nine power-play goals this season. At least one of them has scored in each of Buffalo’s past seven games, with both scoring in three of those outings.
