Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Brady Tkachuk any time goal scorer (+135 at FanDuel)
Brady Tkachuk returns to the Ottawa Senators lineup for the first time since the 4 Nations Face-Off, a tournament in which he excelled. Tkachuk scored three goals across three games (excluding the meaningless game against Sweden, in which he only played two minutes), and this success is likely to continue against the San Jose Sharks.
San Jose has lost 16 of its last 18 games, a trend that exists due to terrible defensive play. Over the past two months, the Sharks rank last in the league in xGA/60.
Backing up this defensively-poor team is goaltender Vitek Vanecek, who has struggled in dealing with the product in front of him. Through 17 appearances in the crease this season, Vanecek is 3-9-3 with a .882 SV% and 3.87 GAA.
Tim Stutzle any time goal scorer (+190 at FanDuel)
I also want to back Tkachuk’s teammate, Tim Stutzle, to find the back of the net in this contest. My thinking here is simple: we are guaranteed a profit if either of Tkachuk or Stutzle scores and if both score, all the better.
Not only do Tkachuk and Stutzle skate together on the first line, but they also skate together on the first power play unit as well. The latter is another good way to attack San Jose, given that it ranks in the bottom half of the league in both penalty minutes taken per game and penalty kill percentage.
Finally, Stutzle has scored in three of his past five games against the Sharks.
Connor Bedard Over 0.5 power play points (+290 at bet365)
Sticking with the theme of fading poor special teams, we are going to attack the Anaheim Ducks. They rank 22nd in penalty minutes taken per game and 27th in penalty kill percentage.
That is good news for the Chicago Blackhawks, a team whose only redeeming quality these days is their power play unit. Entering this matchup, Chicago ranks sixth in power play percentage, which is a product of forward Connor Bedard’s success in the offensive zone on the man advantage.
Bedard leads the team with 23 power-play points, which is also tied for 16th-best in the entire NHL.
Considering these dynamics, it shouldn’t be surprising that Bedard boasts five power-play points through five career games against Anaheim.
