The Flames will need to produce on the power play if they want to compete with the Avalanche, and a key to the success of that operation is defenseman MacKenzie Weegar.

The Calgary Flames continue their road trip on Monday evening against the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena. Oddsmakers list Colorado as a -260 favorite, with the total set at 6.

Calgary defenseman MacKenzie Weegar has recorded nine points in his past 12 games, a trend I expect to continue in my Flames vs. Avalanche predictions. Read on for my NHL picks for Monday, March 31.

Flames vs Avalanche prediction

My Flames pick: MacKenzie Weegar Over 0.5 points (+110 at BET99)

My Flames analysis
There are not many ways to attack the Colorado Avalanche, one of the best teams in the league in virtually every category. However, the one area where Colorado is exploitable is special teams.

Specifically, the penalty kill is the only statistic where the Avs hover around the league average. That's good news for Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar.

Nearly half of Weegar’s points this season have come on the man advantage, where he can again succeed in this matchup. Weegar has recorded 10 points over his past 14 games against Colorado.

Furthermore, goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood is slated to guard the cage for the Avalanche. While Blackwood has been excellent, he's been known to struggle against Calgary.

Over his past five starts against the Flames, Blackwood is 2-2-1 with a .878 SV% and 4.36 GAA. Weegar recorded a point in the most recent of those five outings.

Flames vs Avalanche same-game parlay (SGP)

MacKenzie Weegar Over 0.5 points

Jonathan Huberdeau Over 0.5 points

Flames +1.5

Jonathan Huberdeau is also likely to get on the scoresheet if Weegar records a point. Huberdeau skates alongside Weegar on the first power-play unit and leads the team in power-play points.

The last time Calgary faced Colorado, Weegar assisted a Huberdeau goal. If both players contribute offensively, the Flames’ chances of covering the puck line increase. Calgary has covered +1.5 in 10 of its past 13 games.
