The Ottawa Senators will look to tighten their grip on the first Wild Card spot in the East as they aim for a third straight win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jake Sanderson has been an offensive force for the Sens since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off, and my Senators vs. Penguins predictions and NHL picks for Sunday, March 30 expect him to find the score sheet against a porous Pittsburgh defense.

Senators vs Penguins prediction

My Senators pick: Jake Sanderson Over 0.5 points (-107 at Pinnacle)

My Senators analysis
Jake Sanderson was one of the youngest players named to the United States roster at last month’s 4 Nations Face-Off, as well as one of the bright spots on an impressive American blueline.

The 22-year-old logged a goal in the championship game against Canada and has carried that confidence and momentum into the final couple months of the NHL season.

Sanderson leads the Ottawa Senators with 13 points through 14 games in March and increased his totals last night with another goal in a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The defenseman is also logging over 24 minutes per night — by far the most among all Senators skaters.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are now well out of the playoff race, primarily due to their brutal team defense. The Pens have surrendered an NHL-worst 4.24 goals per game since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off, while also giving up 17 goals over their last three contests.

Scoring should come easy for the Sens tonight and with that, Sanderson should find the score sheet at least once.

Senators vs Penguins odds analysis

The Senators opened as the road favorite at -130 and we’ve only seen their edge increase ahead of puck drop with Pinnacle sliding Ottawa as high as -140.

Ottawa has won six straight meetings against Pittsburgh, including both previous meetings this season. Meanwhile, the Penguins have dropped three straight and four of their last five overall.

No starter has yet been named for the Pens but it doesn’t seem to really matter who tends the net as the club ranks third-last in team save percentage this season (.889). When you’re also giving up 30.5 shots against per game (29th), a lot of pucks are going to go into the net.

Our total opened at 6 with 61% of bettors putting their money on the Over by early Sunday afternoon. The Over has cashed in each of Pittsburgh’s last seven games and 13 of Ottawa’s last 20, so a desperate Senators offense vs. a porous Penguins defense should lead to some goals tonight.
