Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Prop bet #1: Brayden Point anytime goalscorer
Kicking off the afternoon portion of Sunday’s NHL slate is a tilt in the sunshine state between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Tampa Bay’s Jake Guentzel-Brayden Point-Nikita Kucherov line is arguably the best in hockey, and they could be in store for a big game against a Florida team that ranks 22nd in goals allowed per game. That ranking is a product of two factors.
First, the Panthers have struggled to stay out of the box, ranking 28th in penalty minutes taken per game. Second, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has struggled to play up to his usual standards. Through 23 starts, Bobrovsky possesses a .896 SV%.
That brings us to Brayden Point, who leads the Bolts with 21 goals through 26 games. He also leads the team in power-play goals, which could come into play against the Panthers and their aforementioned penalty-taking issues.
Prop bet #2: Jake Guentzel anytime goalscorer
My thinking here is simple: I'm confident at least one of Point or Jake Guentzel scores in this game, which guarantees a profit. If both score, all the better.
I mentioned the Panthers’ penalty-taking problems in the previous section, which should bode well for both Point and Guentzel. Not only do they skate together on the first line, but they also serve as the primary triggermen on the first power play unit.
They are the top two goalscorers in Tampa, both at even-strength and on the power play. In fact, Guentzel and Point have combined for 72% of the Lightning’s power-play goals scored this year.
Prop bet #3: Tom Wilson anytime goalscorer
At the same time, the Washington Capitals host the Los Angeles Kings. While a big storyline for Washington is the absence of Alexander Ovechkin, an even bigger storyline has been its success without him.
The Capitals sit atop the Metropolitan Division, and a big reason for this success has been the elevated play of Tom Wilson in Ovi’s absence. Wilson has helped fill the void for Washington, scoring seven goals over the past 11 games.
Four of those seven goals have come on the man advantage, something that could come into play against a Kings team that ranks in the bottom half of the league in penalty minutes taken per game.
Furthermore, goaltender David Rittich is slated to start between the pipes for Los Angeles. He possesses a .890 SV% through 18 appearances in the crease this season and ranks 21st out of the 26 goaltenders to play at least that many games in goals saved above expected per 60 minutes.
