Wednesday’s TNT doubleheader kicks off with an Atlantic Division tilt as the Detroit Red Wings host the Buffalo Sabres. The NHL odds list Detroit as a -132 favorite, while the total is set at 6.5.

The Over has hit in eight of the last 11 meetings between these two teams, a trend I expect to continue, as I detail in my Sabres vs. Red Wings predictions below.

Read on for my NHL picks for Wednesday, March 12.

Sabres vs Red Wings prediction

My best bet: Over 6.5 (-102 at FanDuel)

My analysis
Across the past two months, both the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings rank in the Top 9 of the league in xGF/60. Both teams are generating and surrendering high-danger scoring chances at a high rate.

Both teams also rank in the Bottom 7 of the league in xGA/60 in that same stretch. When both teams have highly efficient offenses and weak defenses, the Over is the logical play.

At -102, the Over 6.5 line presents solid value in this matchup. Furthermore, neither projected starting goaltender has played particularly well over the past few weeks.

Buffalo’s Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has surrendered three or more goals in four of his past five starts, posting a 1-4 record over that stretch with a .873 SV% and 3.91 GAA. Meanwhile, Detroit’s Cam Talbot is 0-4 over his last four starts with a .850 SV% and 3.85 GAA.

Finally, both teams rank in the bottom half of the league in penalty kill percentage, another factor that is likely to contribute to a high-scoring affair.

Sabres vs Red Wings same-game parlay (SGP)

Over 6.5

Dylan Larkin anytime goal

Tage Thompson anytime goal

Dylan Larkin and Tage Thompson are the best candidates from each side to find the back of the net, especially given their recent form.

Larkin has scored in his last three games, while Thompson has found the net five times in his last five. Additionally, Larkin has scored nine goals over his last 10 games against Buffalo, while Thompson has lit the lamp five times over his last five games against Detroit.
