The NHL returns from the holiday hiatus with 14 games on the slate, including another installment of the Battle of Ontario with the Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Ottawa Senators.
The NHL odds suggest the Leafs should win the game, and I expect Auston Matthews to continue his torrid pace and factor in once again tonight.

The NHL returns after the Christmas break with a big-time rivalry game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators. Both squads got an early Christmas gift with victories in their final game before the hiatus and will be looking to start a streak.
The Leafs have been a Jekyll and Hyde team over the past couple of weeks with varying performances each game. However, the one consistent thing that has been Auston Matthews filling the net.
The Leafs sniper is currently riding a seven-game goal-scoring streak, with 12 tallies in that span. I look for him to make it an eighth. It has been the best bet on the board all month, after all with Matthews notching at least a goal in eight of the nine December games.
Admittedly, it’s been a while Matthews has scored on a Sens goalie. His last goal against the provincial rival was May of 2021, seven straight meetings without a goal. So one could say he’s due. Especially with the Sens struggling to keep the puck out the back of the net this season.
Ottawa is giving up an average of 3.91 goals per game on the road, the fifth most in the NHL. while also allowing 33.5 shots per game. That should give Matthews plenty of opportunity to hit the score sheet. Especially with the Leafs are the third-best team offensively on home ice, averaging 3.81 goals per game.
Additionally, Matthews has been a beast on home ice with 19 goals in just 15 games at Scotiabank Arena this season. There should be plenty of opportunity for him to add to those numbers tonight against the struggling Senators.
My best bet: Auston Matthews anytime goal (-125 at SIA)

In addition to Matthews nabbing an anytime goal, let’s take the Leafs to go Over 3.5 for the game. The Sens have given up four or more goals in seven straight games. Meanwhile, the Leafs will look to make it nine straight tonight as they averaged 4.2 in December.
For my final leg, let’s roll with the Over on the alternate total of 6.5 goals. The Over has hit in four of the last five meetings between these teams, including both games earlier this season. I think we see another high-scoring affair in this one.

Senators vs Maple Leafs moneyline and Over/Under analysis
The Maple Leafs are large favorites tonight at -175 odds, with the Sens entering as +145 road dogs. Toronto is 7-3 on the moneyline in the last 10 games between these two. With plenty of rest after the holiday break, I’d bank on a rested Leafs team to win the game against the dysfunctional Sens.
The total for tonight’s game opened at 7.0 goals, with the favored side being on the Over at -115, while the Under is offering -105 odds. The total has gone Over in both games this season and in five of the last seven meetings overall.
The Leafs are scoring at an elite rate, which should continue against Ottawa, but Toronto has also struggled defensively this month with the seventh-highest expected goals against while surrendering the ninth-most goals against.
