NHL team projected to have the highest team point totals in 2024-25
Edmonton Oilers (108.5)
The team with the best player has the highest points total? Shocker! The Edmonton Oilers were one win away from ending Canada's 31-year Cup drought, and they'll be back with a vengeance.
Additions like Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson upgrade Leon Draisaitl's linemates big time from last year, while Stuart Skinner is now the bonafide No. 1 netminder on this squad. The defense isn't anything to write home about, but Josh Brown will fit in as a nice top-four piece.
Dallas Stars (103.5)
The Dallas Stars have arguably the deepest roster in the NHL, and the books know that as well. Their offense will sorely miss the contributions of now-retired Joe Pavelski, but Dallas still has enough talent in the Top 6 to score with the league's elite.
Even on nights when things aren't clicking, Jake Oettinger is the perfect man to keep his team in any game. The 25-year-old is an elite netminder whose name will be floating around the Vezina odds all season long.
NHL point total predictions
Best Over bet: Edmonton Oilers Over 108.5
I want you to look at it like this. The Edmonton Oilers began last season 2-9-1, and still finished with 104 points. They now enter this season hungrier than ever with better forward depth, a clear No. 1 netminder, and a head coach who had this team play to a 46-18-5 record through his 69 games.
That record works out to a 55-win season over 82 games. The wins alone are enough to clear this points total, and we haven't even included overtime losses. I'm not asking Edmonton to take a giant leap. I'm just asking them to play at the level they're clearly capable of for the entire year.
Best Under bet: Vegas Golden Knights Under 97.5
Those envious of the Vegas Golden Knights winning their first Cup six years after their debut may have something to celebrate. The Knights lost a shit ton of players this offseason, including Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Marchessault. Jack Eichel will be tasked with being Vegas' No. 1 guy, something that didn't pan out well in Buffalo.
This roster is clearly more talented than any of those Sabres squads, but losing over 70 goals in free agency isn't just something to forget about, and Eichel can't make up that ground himself. Then there's the netminding issues...
Logan Thompson now plays in Washington, leaving Adin Hill with the starting gig. Although good, Hill is yet to top 40 games in one season, and injury problems are a real concern — especially with Ilya Samsonov being the backup.
The Golden Knights play in one of the NHL's toughest divisions, and they simply lost too much to match last year's points total of 98.
