Chelsea vs Wrexham picks and predictions

My best bet:
Over 3.5 and both teams to score (-102 at Betano)

My analysis
It’s always interesting to see how Wrexham matches up against teams in the Premier League, as we’ve followed their growth since the takeover from Reynolds and McElhenney. However, this game is arguably the most interesting given it’s the first for Chelsea under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Maresca comes into the job replacing Mauricio Pochettino, following winning the Championship with Leicester City last season. It’s an appointment that had some question marks given Pochettino’s late-season revival, especially with Maresca nearly choking their title challenge with one of — if not the best — squad in the division.

We have to factor in two key pieces of data when looking at this game. Firstly, Chelsea and Maresca will be without several key players. Enzo Fernandez, Marc Cucurella, Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, and Moises Caicedo had deep runs in their international tournaments this summer and are unavailable.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Slonina is away on Olympic duty, and Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, and Romleu Lukaku have been left at home. Wrexham, on the other hand, will be without Pual Mullin, their talismanic striker who's recovering from surgery, alongside Jacob Mendy

The final key piece of information is that Wrexham have already played this summer, drawing 1-1 with Bournemouth in California at the weekend. That performance and increased fitness of the Wrexham players is the reason for our best bet: Over 3.5 and both teams to score.

This Chelsea team is capable of scoring plenty of goals against League One opposition, with Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku, and Raheem Sterling all likely to start in the forward positions. Wrexham have done brilliantly to reach League One but with the greatest of respect, they aren’t at the level of Chelsea and will give up several goals.

That said, Chelsea come into this with no match fitness at all and will be rusty with several players having not played since last season and some — such as Tosin Adarabioyo — making their debut for the club and being unfamiliar with their teammates. That should create plenty of opportunity for Wrexham to find the scoresheet.

Chelsea vs Wrexham same-game parlay (SGP)

Over 3.5

Both teams to score — Yes

Chelsea -1

In addition to our best bet, we’re also going to back Chelsea to win against the -1 spread. Chelsea have far more quality in depth than Bournemouth did when they met Wrexham last week. The attacking positions are full of stars with immense talent and even if they aren’t totally match-fit, they’ll be more than capable of running Wrexham to shreds. We should see Chelsea score 3-4 goals at least.
