The hosts of Euro 2024 are back in action on Wednesday when Germany battles Hungary. The Germans thumped Scotland 5-1 on the opening day to take a lead in Group A, while Hungary lost to an impressive Switzerland team.
Get stuck in my Euro 2024 picks and find out why I'm expecting a win for the hosts in my Germany vs. Hungary prediction for June 19.
Germany vs Hungary picks, predictions, and betting tips
My best bet:
Germany to win and Under 3.5 goals (+105 at Betano)
My analysis
To really understand this game we need to look at what we saw from both teams in their openers. The Hungarians lost 3-1 to a very efficient Swiss team. Hungary started the game sluggishly and were 2-0 down at half, but they fought back and had the better of Switzerland in the second 45: they just couldn’t overturn the deficit.
Then you have Germany, who thumped a Scotland side that played awful and couldn't press. We knew beforehand Scotland lacked real star quality, and their forward line had no real firepower. A defeat was always on the cards, but the manner of their performance was shocking. You have to give credit to Germany for what they did, but it wouldn’t have been possible without Scotland allowing them to do it.
Don't expect that to happen against Hungary. They have much more bite offensively than in previous tournaments and are more eager to press, are more tough in the tackle, and are harder to break down than Scotland. Don't be shocked if they score as the German defense hasn’t really been tested, and they won't dominate like they did against the Scotts.
Germany will win on Wednesday. They’ve got quality in their ranks, the home support on their side, and they’ll be full of confidence after the first game. However, if you’re expecting a repeat of their huge opening game scoreline, you won’t be in luck. Take Germany and Under 3.5 goals.
Jamal Musiala odds, prop for Wednesday
My best bet
Under 2.5 shots (-139 at Betano)
My analysis
The main storyline around the German victory over Scotland was their dual 10s, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. Both players were exceptional, each finding the scoresheet inside the first 20 minutes. It’s perhaps unfair to say one was better than the other, but Musiala won Man of the Match, and he was truly superb.
Despite scoring, it’s worth noting he only took one shot in that game, with the bulk of his play in and around the Scottish box acting to link up play for others. Given he had just one shot against a terrible Scottish team, it’s hard to see him trebling that against the superior Hungarians.
Germany vs Hungary same-game parlay (SGP)
Mittelstadt didn’t manage to put one on the net against Scotland, but he was tied with Florian Wirtz and Leroy Sane for the most shots against Scotland, and he had as many shots as strikers Kai Havertz and Niclas Fullkrug combined. If he continues that volume then it’s only a matter of time until one is on target.
The final leg is for Florian Wirtz to score. He scored the opener after 10 minutes last Friday and had three shots in that game. After a strong season that saw him score 11 goals in Bundesliga, he’s ready to fire Germany to glory here.
