Side analysis
The standout game on Tuesday's schedule is Leeds vs. Everton. These clubs are arguably two of the most-discussed teams outside of the traditional Top 4 and with good reason.
The visitors, Everton, are 18th in the Premier League but it already looks like it’s going to be a long, hard season for the Merseyside club. There have been reports of home-grown star Anthony Gordon moving to Chelsea, but for now that might have cooled. Everton have signed both Conor Coady and James Tarkowski, both captains at Premier League clubs last year, to give them the experience and leadership in the dressing room. It’s probably too early to say that it’s worked, especially when Everton have yet to pick up a win, but they do look stronger and more resolute than in previous years, although with Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured, there are doubts over whether or not they can score enough goals to turn draws into wins.
Neutrals have loved watching Leeds United for years. Under Marcelo Bielsa, they were one of the most attacking and enjoyable teams to watch, lighting up the Premier League with their all-out attack. Sadly for Bielsa, and indeed the Leeds fanbase, it didn’t quite work out. He was a brilliant manager and an icon for the supporters but his insistence on sticking to his principles cost him as his defense was too weak.
Jesse Marsch replaced the Argentinian manager and had to deal with unhelpful comparisons to another American coach, Ted Lasso. He didn’t look to curb Leeds’ attacking threat too much but he made them stronger at the back and his tactics were a large part of the reason the club stayed in the Premier League last year. With Leeds’ best two players leaving — Raphinha to Barcelona and Kalvin Phillips to Man City — relegation wasn't out of the question.
Luckily, the signing of two Americans has really helped the team this season, and Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson look like real steals in the transfer market. Aaronson, in particular, has offered the Leeds attack real dynamism and intensity. He doesn’t stop running for 90 minutes and is great at bringing the ball up the pitch.
Leeds lost at the weekend to Brighton but they’ve registered wins over Wolves and Chelsea already this season and will pose a real threat to Everton, especially in front of that loud home crowd. Marsch will set his team up in a 4-2-3-1 with Jack Harrison, Luis Sinisterra, and Aaronson behind Rodrigo, who has been great in front of goal this season. Adams and Mateusz Klich will sit in front of the back four and help break up Everton’s attacks.
We should see Neal Maupay start down the middle for Everton, making his debut having recently been signed from Brighton. It’s not the most inspiring signing but with Calvert-Lewin still injured, it’s an upgrade on the backups. He’ll be flanked by Gordon and Dwight McNeil, who will look to patrol the flanks and get in behind the spaces left by Leeds’ fullbacks. Everton’s back three of Coady, Tarkowski, and Michael Keane will have support from the wingbacks Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson, but the game will be won and lost with how Alex Iwobi and Amadou Onana do in the middle of the park. Iwobi has quietly been Everton’s best player for a while now, and Onana has shown glimpses of quality.
Despite the ability in Everton's midfield, I don’t think they’ll be able to compete against this Leeds team who have won both of their games at Elland Road this season and work brilliantly as a unit. They’re a seriously impressive team now and with the home supporters behind them, they should have too much for Everton.
Prediction: Leeds moneyline (+115 at DraftKings)
Over/Under analysis
You may be forgiven for thinking that we’ll go Over 2.5 goals here, considering the six goals scored across Leeds' prior two home contests. It’s something the sportsbooks believe will happen, however, I think if you look at Everton’s recent games, it makes far more sense to take Under 2.5 goals at +100.
In four Premier League games this season, Everton have conceded in every game. In only one of those games did they allow more than one goal. With the signings of Coady and Tarkowski, it’s clear that Lampard is focusing on making this team tough to beat.
For that reason, I’d expect the former Chelsea midfielder to set his team up to keep things tight. And although Leeds should have enough to break them down, I think it should be a low-scoring game.
Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals (+100 at bet365)
Best bet
When I look at the betting markets on Leeds vs Everton, I really can’t recommend anything more than the +115 available on Leeds to win. They’ve been so impressive this season and I can’t see Everton managing to score against the great defensive shape Marsch has instilled in this Leeds team.
Leeds are a joy to watch right now and their games are always fun. So sit back, enjoy this one, and back Leeds to get the three points.
Pick: Leeds moneyline (+115 at DraftKings)
