When Manchester United visits the King Power Stadium on Sunday, Leicester City hopes to find crucial points in their fight against relegation from the Premier League.
The Foxes have lost six straight matches in all competitions and have taken just three of a possible 24 points in the league.
With just 10 matches remaining, defeat to the Red Devils could see them fall nine points from safety, putting them in extreme danger.
Ruben Amorim’s side has looked vastly improved the past week, and I explain why that will continue in my Leicester City vs Manchester United soccer picks for Sunday, March 16.
Premier League predictions for Leicester City vs Man United
My best bet: Manchester United ML (-117 at TonyBet)
My analysis
Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday gave tremendous hope to supporters, not just because they advanced in the Europa League.
It was a performance that built on a strong second half last weekend against Arsenal and one that truly showcased what Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system can do when the players understand what’s being asked of them.
This was most evident in defense, where, aside from a questionable penalty decision early in the match, the Red Devils were almost flawless.
They severely limited the ability of Martin Zubimendi to influence the match, utilizing different rest defenses to cut off supply and force him into positions where he had no forward outlets.
And while Manchester United needed two penalties to get out to their lead shortly after halftime, they weren’t lacking in chances created. Patrick Dorgu—who will be out for this match through suspension—was a menace from the attacking wingback spot, and both he and Diogo Dalot showcased Amorim’s desire to switch play between wingbacks in attack.
Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui were both very solid against Arsenal, and it was Mazraoui who nearly found the back of the net 10 minutes after halftime only to be denied by a tremendous save.
Against a Leicester City side that has conceded the second-most goals in the Premier League this season, the attacking returns of the wingbacks should bear fruit.
The Foxes have lost eight of their last nine matches in all competitions. That includes a 2-1 defeat to this very Man United side just over a month ago, as Harry Maguire’s stoppage-time winner knocked them out of the FA Cup.
But the biggest concern is their inability to score goals. Since Bilal El Khannouss’s 50th-minute goal gave them a 2-1 win over Tottenham on January 26, the Foxes have gone more than 500 minutes without scoring in the Premier League.
At home, it’s been even worse, without a goal in any of their last six matches at home.
The Manchester United side that knocked Leicester City out of the FA Cup will be fairly different from the one the Foxes will face on Sunday.
Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, and Leny Yoro will all be out due to injury, but the side that does take the pitch will be much more confident and prepared for how their manager wants them to operate within his system.
If this were two weeks ago, I’d back the Foxes to find a way to steal a point. But Leicester City isn’t even creating chances right now, with a total of 1.55 xG over their last five outings.
The Red Devils will want to build on their past week's performances, and this is just the spot to do it. Take Manchester United to win in a strong performance.
Bruno Fernandes pick:
My best bet
Bruno Fernandes to score (-130 at TonyBet)
I really like Bruno Fernandes to score at +160. I expected a lower price, given he’s coming off a hat trick and has goals in three of his last four matches.
He scored an outstanding free kick last week against Arsenal and drove home a first-time effort against Fulham from near the top of the box two weeks ago.
With him on free kick and penalty duties, it’s solid value against the second-leakiest defense in the Premier League.
In his last four matches, he’s seen a huge uptick in attempts. He’s taken 2+ shots in each outing, with 12 attempted in total, and he’s put eight of those on target.
He’s getting +179 odds to put at least two accurate attempts on goal, which he’s done in three of his last four matches, and that offers solid value as well.
