Side analysis
On Tuesday, we see Liverpool welcome Inter Milan to Anfield in a game that could be packed with lots of quick, attacking football.
When these two clubs met two weeks ago, it was Liverpool who came out victorious, leaving Italy with a 2-0 lead to take back to their home ground.
If Inter has any hope of progressing to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, they’re going to need to attack and get at least two goals. Unfortunately for the Nerazzurri, they’re up against one of the quickest and best teams on the planet when it comes to the counterattack.
Both Liverpool and Inter sit in second place in their domestic leagues, with Liverpool six points behind Man City with a game in hand and Inter two points behind city rivals AC Milan, also with a game in hand.
Inter Milan won the Serie A title last year but since that victory, they’ve seen manager Antonio Conte and star striker Romelu Lukaku move on. Under Simone Inzaghi, they’ve continued to play well though. They’ve outscored every other team in Serie A and also possess the league’s second-best defensive record too.
They’re a serious outfit but in the first leg of this tie, you saw that they weren’t really a match for Liverpool, such as the dominance of the Premier League teams in the world game these days.
As evidenced by the aforementioned Conte and Lukaku both ending up in England. There’s always a chance of an upset in the Champions League but it's looking more and more likely that the trophy will end up in England with only Bayern Munich and maybe PSG really being able to stop them.
Liverpool, again like Inter, have the best goalscoring record in the league and the second-best defensive team. They are genuinely an incredible team that has been built brilliantly. If it weren’t for the brilliance of Man City, there’d be debates over whether this Liverpool side was the best in Premier League history.
They’ve had a superb starting 11 for some time but the biggest change now is that they have great depth too. January signing Luis Diaz already looks like a monster. The former Porto man might be all skin and bones but his electric pace and footwork already look like a match made in heaven for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
He scored 14 in 18 games for Porto before his move to England and despite only notching once in four Premier League games, he’s clearly a great fit. He came off the bench in the first leg of this tie but after his recent performances, you’d expect to see him keep his starting spot in that front three alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool’s attack is lethal. With extreme speed, technique, and intelligent play, they have nearly everything. The only thing they’re really missing is a big physical presence but they so rarely need a ‘Plan B’ that it doesn’t matter.
Liverpool will as always go 4-3-3, with Inter Milan in something resembling a 3-5-2. Despite minor differences in shape, both teams will be reliant on their wingbacks getting up and offering width to attacks, while also tracking back and supporting those at the heart of the defense.
For Liverpool, it’ll be Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konte in the center and tasked with stopping Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez. We all know about van Dijk’s brilliance but the new signing Konte already looks like a formidable partner and they have the tools to look down on Dzeko and Martinez.
Inter needs to go for this and in doing so it’s only going to make them more susceptible to Liverpool’s strengths. The odds on Liverpool are only -188 which aren’t great but I cannot see a way that they don’t win this.
Prediction: Liverpool (-188)
Over/Under analysis
My reasoning for this very much relates to the last point. This is a game in which Inter Milan will need to go out and attack, they simply can’t afford to sit back. That’s going to create gaps and space for Liverpool to strike.
As the clock gets closer to full tim, we’re going to see more and more desperation from Inter which will just extenuate those issues.
The first leg saw two goals, and now we have Liverpool at home in front of their own fans and an Inter team who’ll be throwing everything at scoring multiple goals. Another wager that isn’t the big odds but it’s hard to look at anything but Over 2.5 goals.
Prediction: Over 2.5 (-163)
Best bet
I’m sorry to be offering you another short price here but the best bet of the game is betting on Mohamed Salah to score. I wouldn’t usually have something at -125 as my best bet but this really does feel like a lock.
This season the Egyptian has, if he hadn’t already, ascended to being one of the greatest players on the planet. At his best, when working in from the right flank he’s incredibly effective. His passing, especially in key areas is fantastic and his work rate shows his selflessness.
He’s already notched 19 goals in 25 Premier League appearances this year and has added another eight in just seven Champions League games.
He scored late in the first game at the San Siro and with Inter pushing players forward and looking for goals it’s going to leave lots of room for the Egyptian King to find the back of the net.
Pick: Mohamed Salah to score (-125)
