NEW YORK -- Tommy Pham's three-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning Monday night by the St. Louis Cardinals, who survived some shoddy defense to hang on for a 6-3 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field.
The Cardinals (45-47) have alternated wins with losses through the first four games following the All-Star Break. The Mets (41-49) have lost two straight games.
Pham reached base four times in five plate appearances via two walks, a single and the home run. Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer in the sixth and has homered in four straight games against the Mets, the longest streak by a Cardinals player in the history of the series.
Winning pitcher Adam Wainwright also helped his own cause with an RBI double. On the mound, Wainwright (11-5) won his fourth straight start by allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings.
A quartet of relievers combined to blank the Mets over the final 3 1/3 innings, with Brett Cecil earning his first save by getting the final three outs. Cecil induced Yoenis Cespedes to hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play with runners at the corners.
Michael Conforto and Lucas Duda each hit solo homers for the Mets while Jose Reyes had two doubles and scored on a pair of errors following his second double.
Right-hander Zack Wheeler (3-7) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five over 5 1/3 innings.
Conforto's homer provided the only run through the first five innings -- during which the Mets and Cardinals combined to strand 13 runners -- before both teams busted out in an eventful sixth.
Yadier Molina led off the sixth with a single and scored on DeJong's homer. Kolten Wong singled and was forced on a grounder by Magneuris Sierra before Wainwright extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI double that chased Wheeler.
Josh Edgin walked Matt Carpenter before Pham greeted Hansel Robles by crushing a three-run homer.
The Mets chipped away in the sixth, when Duda homered with one out. Reyes followed with a double but took third when Sierra bobbled the ball and raced home when Sierra's throw sailed into foul territory behind third base.
