Luis Severino pitched five effective innings and struck out slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. three times as the host New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 on Thursday to earn a split of a four-game series.
Severino (1-0) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out six for his first win as a starter since beating Toronto on Sept. 22, 2019.
Guerrero struck out four times for the first time in his career, a night after homering three times and getting his right hand stepped on by Aaron Hicks in the second inning.
In the first inning with Bo Bichette on second base, Guerrero fanned on a changeup. Guerrero led off the third and got caught looking at a cutter on the outside corner and briefly looked back at plate umpire Pat Hoberg before returning to the dugout.
Guerrero then whiffed on a changeup to end the fifth as Severino's outing finished at 83 pitches. His fourth strikeout came on a slider against Clay Holmes to open the eighth.
New York backup catcher Jose Trevino had a pair of run-scoring hits. Shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who began the night 1-for-17 on the season, had three hits and two runs.
Trevino hit an RBI single in the third off Kevin Gausman (0-1) for New York's first run and duplicated the feat in the fifth for a 2-0 lead.
Giancarlo Stanton added an RBI groundout in the eighth.
Five relievers followed Severino. Lucas Luetge threw one inning. Holmes retired Bichette to end the seventh after Miguel Castro hit George Springer with a pitch.
Chad Green got an inning-ending double play in the eighth. Aroldis Chapman opened the ninth with three straight walks, but Michael King fanned Springer got Bichette to line out into a double play for his first career save.
Gausman allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked none in an 83-pitch outing.
