Dejan Vasiljevic scored a team-high 18 points as the host Miami Hurricanes snapped a four-game losing streak with a 71-61 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies on Tuesday night.
The Hurricanes (11-9, 3-7 ACC) entered the night tied for last place in the conference but moved past idle Wake Forest with the win.
Virginia Tech (14-7, 5-5) lost consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 6. The Hokies trailed by as many as 22 points in the first half and cut their deficit to four in the final minute of the game.
But the Hurricanes hung on despite the absence of point guard Chris Lykes, who missed his second straight game due to a groin injury. He leads the team in scoring (15.7 points per game).
However, Miami got two players off the injured list: shooting guard Kam McGusty (back) and power forward Keith Stone (knee). McGusty had three points, and Stone did not score.
Miami freshman Harlond Beverly had 13 points -- including six in the final minute -- and center Rodney Miller added 11 points and nine rebounds for Miami.
Tyrece Radford led Virginia Tech with a career-high 22 points. He made 9 of 12 shots from the floor and had a team-high eight rebounds. Landers Nolley II added 14 points.
The first half was close early, with four lead changes and three ties in the first 8:06. But Miami then went on a 24-2 run and took a 44-25 lead into halftime.
The second half featured a desperate Hokies comeback, cutting their deficit to 63-59 with 1:01 left.
But Beverly made a key steal at that point and was fouled while ahead of the defense. Beverly made two free throws, and Miami also got the ball because of the intentional foul. Beverly then added a layup for a four-point trip, and that virtually ended Virginia Tech's chances.
