A pair of undefeated teams highlight the UFL’s Week 2 slate, as the San Antonio Brahmas hit the road to take on the Memphis Showboats.

Memphis will be making its home debut, after going into Houston and scrapping out a win over the Roughnecks.

Meanwhile, San Antonio pulled off the upset of Week 1, crushing the DC Defenders, a team that finished 9-1 a season ago and was an XFL finalist.

That’s helped propel the Brahmas to 2-point favorites in Week 2’s UFL odds.

Brahmas vs Showboats predictions

With veteran Wade Phillips at the helm in San Antonio, it was not hard to imagine a suspect defense would have some teeth in Year 1 in the UFL.

The Brahmas were better than advertised, tied for the fewest points allowed in Week 1 with an impressive 27-12 win.

The 226 total yards surrendered were the second-fewest given in the league, allowing just 32 yards rushing. They also lived in the DC backfield, picking up four tackles for loss, while sacking Jordan Ta’amu four times.

Offensively, there were good returns for new starter Chase Garbers, who went 19-for-25 for 156 yards and two TD tosses, while rushing for another score.

Jontre Kirklin was his main target with eight grabs for 61 yards and a TD, though there was little impact from Cody Latimer, who had just one catch for seven yards. Getting him involved is probably a point of emphasis this week.

Garbers will be tested on Sunday, however, as Memphis’ defense was as impressive as San Antonio’s.

Their 174 total yards allowed was the week’s best, and the Showboats tied the Brahmas for the fewest points allowed in toppling Houston 18-12.

They also matched the Brahmas’ totals with four tackles for loss and four sacks.

However, their offense looks like a work in progress. Veteran Case Cookus completed just 57% of his passes in a 23-for-40 effort, for 204 yards, with a TD pass and an interception.

That 4.8 yards per pass average was second only to DC’s 4.5 – who were clubbed by the Brahmas.

There was a lot on his plate as the Showboats could not run the ball. Memphis rushed for just 32 yards on 19 carries, a grim 1.7-yard average.

Cookus tied for the team lead with 15 yards on the ground on four carries.

The game plan seems simple enough for Phillips and the Brahmas here: force the Showboats to go one-dimensional and force Cookus to beat them through the air.

While San Antonio didn’t run wild, Anthony McFarland averaged 5.2 yards on his nine totes, which probably earned him more touches against an aggressive defense.

That should keep Memphis’ defense honest and limit the pass rush against Garbers, giving him time to move the ball down the field, and ultimately put up some points.

My best bet: Brahmas -2 (-110 at Caesars)

Brahmas vs Showboats same-game parlay

Brahmas -2

Under 39.5

Week 1 showed that the offense and continuity hasn’t yet developed in the new league. Of the four games, only one crossed the 40-point plateau, and that was Birmingham’s 27-14 win over Arlington.

Even in that game, the Stallions needed three 2-point conversions to get to that total.

Memphis did have three scoring drives in Week 1, but they also missed a field goal and had two turnovers to go along with two punts – not a clean game by any means.

San Antonio’s offense should do enough to get the win, but taking the Under on two teams who surrendered the fewest points in Week 1 seems like the right play until shown otherwise.
