Guaranteed Rate Bowl
Oklahoma State Cowboys +4.5 ($1100 to win $1000)
This Bowl Game feels like the start of a massive 4-5 days in College Football and maybe it's because it features two Power 5 Conference schools. Wisconsin is going through a pretty big transition right now with Luke Fickell incoming for the 2023 season and Jim Leonhard coaching out this Bowl Game. This is huge for the program and one would think players see this as a tryout or a chance to prove themselves. The only reason Oklahoma State is an underdog is becasue QB Spencer Sanders and RB Dominic Richardson have opted to enter the transfer portal and won't play in this game. Big loss for the Cowboys? Yes absolutely. Having said that, never doubt Mike Gundy in Bowl Games. The longtime Oklahoma State is 11-5 in Bowl Games and has led the Cowboys to 5 wins in the last 6. The only loss in there was in the 2019 Texas Bowl and even then Oklahoma State lost by only 3. Wisconsin are equally good in Bowl Games but huge question marks remain around this program as they transition from one big name coach to the other. This Bowl Game has a history of not so good games so this should be interesting.
So how does Oklahoma State win without their QB, who played 43 career games as a Cowboy and threw 67 Touchdown Passes, and their RB who ran for 15 touchdowns this season? It's simple. Hope QB Garret Rangel plays better than QB Chase Wolf. Sure Rangel is a rookie and he's going up against a pretty good Wisconsin defense that are only going to be a shell of themselves in this one but he played in 3 games this season, attempted 84 passes, completed 45 of them for 482 passing yards, 2 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions. Meh for sure but he's been in there. Wisconsin QB Chase Wolf has played in 8 games over the span of four season but has attempted only 28 total passes and completed 15 of them for 162 passing yards, 2 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions. Bigger meh. I think the biggest disappointment for Gundy this season was his defense who were awful in every aspect of the game. This is a big time redemption spot for them against a very pedestrian offense that is surely going to be one dimensional and want to run the ball all night.
Even with coach Chryst gone and coach Fickell incoming, it's hard to trust this Wisconsin team and their offense. The Badgers as a program are only 1-4 ATS in their last five games played in December and they are only 2-7 ATS in their last nine games versus a team with a winning record on the season. Oklahoma State comes into this game 6-0 ATS in their last six Bowl Games, they are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games played in December and have covered the spread in 20 of their last 27 non-conference games. Don't forget the Cowboys started the season 5-0 and their first loss was a 43-40 loss to the CFP playoff bound Texas Christian Horned Frogs. Mike Gundy always cares about Bowl Games and given the Wisconsin offense is just as much in shambles as the Cowboys because of their departing players, I'll gladly take the points and bet on a coach who is cash money in these games. Cowboys for me.
