interesting game for me have been thinking about this one more and more then i was originally.  i hate betting against usc first of all, as someone else said carroll likes to run up the score.  however on the other hand, oregon st is not as bad a team as ppl are saying.  penn st is looking like a top 5 team and oregon st doesnt travel well anyways.  they lost to stanford yes but that was a road game hard to play road game first game of the year.  usc on the other hand i have nothing bad to say about but i dont think oregon st should be getting 25 or whatever ridiculous number they are getting at home against anyone.

Good Points for both sides.  More than anything if I were a casual bettor, I would pass this game because there's a lot to be said for both OSU and USC covering.  I'll admit that I have somewhat a biased view of USC since I've been following them since Pete Carroll took over (USC 04 grad, started school last season of Paul "Couldn't" Hackett's illustrious tenure as head coach). 

And as an avid Trojans follower, there is something different about this year's team.  They haven't had any serious injuries other than Wright recently, their defense is the best I've seen since I've been here, and offensively, they may have more overall weapons than any team Pete Carroll has had.

No matter what anybody says, THIS IS another statement game because historically, these are the type of games that have hurt USC in the past and cost them.  And the whole country will be watching (Yes, everyone was watching Ohio State but this Thursday night game is THE ONLY football game on TV so there are no other options) USC and trying to figure out once again, if they are for real. 

GL to all bettors but unfortunately, some people will lose on this game and I think we'll be able to have an even better, more in depth conversation about this team after Thursday evening.

usc wins, covers,  and then they all go pro. game wont even be close usc score 40 something in first half st 7 pts. maybe.  prediction high 5o' or low 60's to 10 or 13 for st.

No, I didn't forget that USC lost to Oregon State two years ago.  But don't you think that they already got their revenge game on State last year?  This is no revenge spot for USC.  Most of the players for USC that started in that game two years ago are probably in the NFL now anyhow.
 
Secondly there's nothing that says that USC will get up for this one just because it's a conference opener.  A simple Pac-10 opener doesn't mean a whole lot when you just went up against the #5 team in the country.  With the way the rest of Pac-10 has performed to this point, USC could probably sleepwalk through the conference and come away unscathed.  I really expect them to have a laxidasical attitute in many conference games this year.  They ALWAYS have a game or two like that.
 
And that bye week stuff probably only gave USC more time for their heads to swell after Ohio State.
 
This game really plays well into the hands of Oregon State as far as covering the number goes if you ask me.

Luckily I don't have to bet on the number of turnovers in this game...only the point spread.  The beauty of it is that I really don't overthink things like this.  I bet letdown spots first and foremost every week.  This is one. 

I'm only concerned with whether or not USC comes in to this one focussed.  If they do, then I lose.  If they don't, I win.  No regrets.  I play these spots all the time and do pretty well in the long run.

I completely understand your angle here and I love betting against teams in letdown situations as well. I just don't see this game being one of them.

There are compelling arguments from each side here.  While I would be kinda scared to go against SC, 3-4 td road faves are not my cup of tea either, dont care how "good" one team is and how "bad" the other is.  Yes, SC looked very impressive against an overmatched Ohio st team but how good are the buckeyes anyway? Struggling to beat Ohio and Troy both at home, this doesn't seem like the measuring stick you should be using to gauge USC.  It's only the 5th week in and already most people are penciling SC into the title game. It's a long season people. Im not saying SC wont get to the title game, let's just give them a few more games to show how good they are.
 
My last point would be instead of banging your heads together on picking a side on this game, how about taking the easy side with the over...Im pretty sure Oregon st isnt gonna stop SC and the beavers should be good for a few scores at least 1 in garbage time

I'm with you on this one. The number has jumped 3 points already based on so much hype. Take the emotion out of betting and play your spots..totally agree. 26pts is a lot of road chalk. USC was only able to cover this once last year vs. Notre Dame 38-0. The other 5 road games didn't break the 20 pt margin.

The backdoor cover is wide open for large spreads like this. However, i don't think it will happen that way. USC cruises steadily throughout the game 31-13.

All good points. Although it's a lot of points to lay, I just think with Carroll's ego, and a nationally televised game, he'll want to run it up. Also, it seems like the way the polls have gone this year, you need a wide margin of victory in these games in case of an upset or a real strong performance somewhere else in the country to be sure you don't drop in the rankings. USC rolls

Thanks fellas.  Throw Away...Needmoney...good luck to the both of you.  No one can say what's gonna happen for sure in this one until it actually kicks off.  Lots of interesting factors.  Just kinda nice to get the debate going back and forth so people can figure out what side they're gonna be on.  Glad we had lots of people throw in their two cents.  Can't wait for tomorrow boys!

clowninmyside, Excellent point Sir, the books do not expect , or want USC or anybody to go 12-0 ATS, this looks like a good spot to fire on the home pup and and hope they can bust a couple of big plays, they may need 3 TD's to cover as I expect the trojans will be able to score in bunchs if motivated to do so- take the home team and the points,,its Gambling 101 guys,,see ya at the cashiers window

Wiz you make alot of good pts but after watching an athletic Penn ST team do whatever they wanted for 4 qtrs,its hard to justify layin dough against a superior USC team.The Buckeyes are not the team everyone thought they were but they still have a respectable D and USC made them look like fools.I think you write a great thread and wish you the best of luck!!!!!!!

I laugh at people thinking that the #1 team in america playing in a nationally televised game will not be fired up no matter who the oppenent.  If they lose any game they will be out of the bcs tital picture.  I really think SC's Defense negates any strength this Oreg st. team has. I see 2 picks from this QB as he will be throwing the ball up for grabs trying to get back in the game.

As a recent graduate from SC, here's my personal take on the team:

1) Carroll does an amazing job of having the team focus one game at a time.  The focus will be there.

2) The defense is scary good.  Cushing and Wright might be out, but Clay Matthews and Josh Pinkard are former starters.  Josh Pinkard was declared as the best athlete on the team at one one point in either 06 or 07.

3) There's way too much talk of how bad the Pac10 is and whether or not USC is going to be left out against an undefeated SEC or Big 12 team.  Carroll knows how that felt in 03 and saw Auburn get the short end of the stick in 04.

USC is going to roll in impressive fashion.  I'm thinking 42-3.

good points for both sides by everyone.  I just remember those Thurs. nite blow-outs provided  by VaTech and co. courtesy of Frank Beamer and his talented teams when they were the only games on that evening.  Just my feeling.  GLTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

all things aside, southern cal is an overrated team who has played two games against nobody. they also fail at games like this and especially against teams like this. gg
