Ok to all the people on here bashing owning arms and pro - gun control I want you to hear a story of what happened to me and my cousins when I was 11 years old. lets see if your opinion changes or at least if you can understand why people want the right to bear arms.

I was staying with my aunt (my uncle was out of town at the time) at their bay house, in 1999 in point clear alabama, with my 5 cousins 4 boys one girl, and my cousins friend during the summer as a getaway for a couple of weeks, and all of my cousins were basically my best friends growing up. we had all gone to bed, as me and my cousin patrick and robert were not yet asleep but preparing too in the loft on their dock. my cousin jack and hunter slept in 2 single beds inside their house, and my cousin alice, and her friend stephanie were in the room across from my aunt helen. before i finish me pat and robert never knew anything was going on until we heard the noise. well late at night im guessing about 2 am an intruder broke into the house and had a knife, and had no intention of robbing or getting money this was just a terrible person. he opened the back door which was just a screen door with a weak lock, and got in somehow. he walked into the house toward my cousins alices room and opened the door. my aunt didnt hear the initial screen door open but did hear the door open to my cousins room and felt something was wrong. my cousin stayed asleep surprisingly and the man brought his attention to her friend stephanie. he woke her up and put his hand over this poor 8 year olds mouth and she let out a noise but he told her he would hurt her if she talked and he led her out of bed and was about to leead her outside and kidnap her. my aunt either heard the noise or the door or whatever, well she had a .38 in her bedside table that my uncle had given her. she picked it up and walked out of the room to see what was going on and knew something was wrong. she opened her door as the man was about to leave with stephanie. she screamed and he let go of stephanie and ran at her with the knife. she shot 5 times hitting him 3. then she grabbed stephanie and alice, backed up hysterical and woke my cousins up watching the man lay there on the floor then she grabbed the phone and called the police. the man died at the hospital later the next day.
imagine what would have happened to my aunt and stephanie and God knows who else if she wouldnt have had a gun. She would have gotten slaughtered by the knife and stephanie would have been probably raped and killed. Also, he may have killed everyone in the house. If you tell me you are against guns at least respect my opinion. and another thing.
IF WE GET RID OF GUNS DO YOU REALLY EXPECT CRIMINALS TO GIVE UP THEIR UNREGISTERED GUNS. NO DUMBASSES THE HONEST CIVILIANS WOULD HAVE NO GUNS, BUT THE CRIMINALS WOULD HAVE ALL THE GUNS THEY COULD EVER WANT IT WOULDNT AFFECT A FELON WHOSE WEAPONS ARE UNREGISTERED AND ILLEGAL ANYWAY.
i respect my aunt and am glad i was never in the house and was safe in the loft, my cousin and her friend still have nightmares and problems 11 years later. but at least they arent dead or tortured. today my family has guns and they are safe put up and the only ones loaded are in a handsafe by my bed. if you are responsible you should never have a problem. I even have grazer bullets so if i shoot they dont go through walls to hurt my family. just imagine if my family would have never owned weapons. they would be torn apart, quite possibly literally.

Also cops have Glocks, guns with no safety. I do not own a Glock for this reason, and was taught when I was younger in proper gun safety. I dont think cops should have Glocks for this reason.

That said, I firmly believe you are safer without guns in your house. Stories like yours are compelling but again, your Aunt was kind of lucky?
She was shooting in the dark at an unknown assailant and with a small child in arms reach. She was terrified and had hopefully never been in this situation before.
True, this is a good story. That said, she could just have easily shot the kid or herself. Firearms are dangerous. Even well trained policeman commonly shoot themselves, not to mention, drunken husbands, or distraught teens.
The chances of a gun providing benefit are far outweighed by the possiblitly of human error is my point.
I am happy to hear this all turned out well.

It's not banned, but nearly impossible to get due to Gang Violence influencing local laws. Thus, the law abiding citizens are endangered by the criminals who will get weapons by any means necessary. If you REALLY want to curb gun violence, ban them completely and put a lengthy sentence for possession of one. Problem is, prisons are already heavily overcrowded and costing taxpayers millions so what is the real solution? Seems like a double edged sword no matter how you look at it; it only makes sense that you give people the right to protect themselves.
As for Costas... How can someone speak in absolutes when discussing a hypothetical, "if Belcher did NOT have a gun, it would NOT have occurred." No one should have to remind Bob of the countless murders/suicides that take place every second by an infinite number of means not including guns. Should people throw out their kitchen knives because they too could escalate a situation? Hardly.

Bob Costas is a piece of sh*t for bringing it up during the game and for bringing it up period. It's easy to blame the gun instead of the person responsible.

How many times in the 50's did a football player kill his wife then himself? How many times in the 1800's were there school shootings? Cars are dangerous too, there is no doubt about it. but the value of a car for transportation and earning a living for outweigh the risk. It is a risk reward model.
You brought up the Constitution and how it protects our right to bear arms. Do you know why the founders put that right to bear arms in there? It was so we could have the ability to protect ourselves through militia in case we were ever to fact tyranny as they did with England. Go ahead and tell yourself guns do not serve as protection, but we can find plenty of stories where guns have saved lives. Call it a risk, reward model if you will, but I am sure those who have kept their lives due to owning a gun for safety are happy with its reward.

If anything it would only make crime worse as the scarcity of guns would drive people to only kill over them for the illegal gun trade it would create. Cars are dangerous too, there is no doubt about it. but the value of a car for transportation and earning a living for outweigh the risk. It is a risk reward model.
You brought up the Constitution and how it protects our right to bear arms. Do you know why the founders put that right to bear arms in there? It was so we could have the ability to protect ourselves through militia in case we were ever to fact tyranny as they did with England. Go ahead and tell yourself guns do not serve as protection, but we can find plenty of stories where guns have saved lives. Call it a risk, reward model if you will, but I am sure those who have kept their lives due to owning a gun for safety are happy with its reward.
And this naive ignorance that people like Bob Costas has really bothers me. To actually believe that banning guns would get rid of them is borderline retarded. If anything it would only make crime worse as the scarcity of guns would drive people to only kill over them for the illegal gun trade it would create. Look at the crime that stopped once Prohibition was ended. Look at the crime we have over drug trade right now. Marijuana is illegal correct? How hard is it to get a hold if you really want it? Man people scare me..........and they don't even need a gun to do so

The idea of having a gun in the house is ludicrous. People are more likely to shoot themselves and or each other than any intruder. The idea of a gun providing safety AS IN THIS CASE, is totally and completely untrue. Guns are dangerous, that is all there is to it.

Crash... My 12 yr old has no idea how to shoot a hand gun and would never ever be put in the position to protect herself or make that decision as she's never home alone. It's my job to protect her. She is a pretty good shot with her rifle and enjoys bench shooting and hunting as much as I do I would hate to see that taken away.. Take away guns and they would end up being just like drugs..... Law obiding citizens would be the only ones without them.
