Do you know the difference between price and cost? Price is a one time thing while cost is ongoing. The initial price here is $5,000.00, but the cost, with the damage this person can do, will certainly dwarf that number.
One of you said that she's a faithful employee for 10 years and to leave her alone. What if you had caught your wife cheating over the course of your 10 year marriage? Will you be a sap and keep letting her back only to spit in your eye? Get real.

Fine. Price vs cost. What will the price be to train a new person and what will the cost be if they can not perfrom up to the standard set by the previous person? I'm sure it will dwarf the number also. So that $5000 could "cost" you way more than in the long run by getting rid of a proven profit maker. Also, if said person pays back the money and doesnt do it again, the end sum is ZERO (minus headache).
Lifes a gamble my friend. Choose, but choose wisely.

Bandit, you quoted "I considered this person a friend." You are the only one that knows your situation and final outcome. I appreciate you looking for advice, empathy and sympathy. Callmetim has a strong view point, I would take everything Callmetim has with a grain off salt. I would let the person go and get a second chance elsewhere...you can reccommend the employee as hireable if she confirms with you, participation in a addiction class and volunteer socialwork for a year. After that say la v

There is very little hard cost in training. Training is easy if you have your procedures, controls, and policies in tact.
What if the new person turns out to be a Superstar? What if the person doesn't pay you back? In some states you cannot take out monies like that out of someone's pay. We can go around and around about this all day.
The best solution is we'll agree to disagree. I was hoping to hear from the man to tell us how it's turned out so far.

Training doesnt cost much at a fast food restuarant, but in a sales job you cant teach personality or people skills. There are pros and cons each way....its a toss up
