Wayne Gretzky hands down..

He has more assists than anyone has Goals + Assists combined and he also has 894 goals 

Bo could've been but wasn't healthy enough
Dion never!
Can make a case for MJ but Gretzky has almost every record. he was a man among boys.

(1)Ted "Head " Williams, played his last game the day I was born (9/28/60) hitting his 521st HR in his final at bat. Last player to hit over .400,was at .399+ and was told he could sit the last day to secure batting 400 because it would have been rounded up and said "no way" and I think he went 6 for 8 in a  double-header to finish at .406 ........ I'm willing to wager over half of you forum members never saw Gretzky play.  He had that uncanny ability to read where the puck was going.  There was a reason he was one of the best skaters I've ever seen.  That's because nobody was allowed to hit him.  As he padded his numbers later in his career, there was an unwritten rule throughout the NHL, "Leave Gretzky Alone".  Best ATHLETE???  Not in my top ten.

When I think athlete I think of someone that excelled in more than one sport. Before I clicked on the link I was thinking of Bo or Deion. I give Bo the edge because he was definitely a better baseball player. If injuries didn't cut his football career short no telling what he would have done.

People forget but Bo Jackson was a bad defensive outfielder.  Career defensive WAR of -4.7.

Padded his numbers??? Are you crazy 

in his 1st 10 years he had over 600 goals and almost 1400 assists points.

I don't understand why you have to excel in two sports?  If you are the best player in your sport, most athletes wouldn't want to play two sports.  That's such a silly argument as to why you would think somebody was the best athlete ever, especially since it doesn't take that much athleticism to play baseball compared to other sports.  If you told me Bo Jackson was the best Football Player and an amazing NBA Player I would be very impressed.  There are plenty of football player that probably could have been solid NBA players and there are probably a few NBA Players that would have been solid NFL Players.  Who dominated their own sport in their prime more than Jordan did?  Nobody.

    If you're talking old school, what about Jim Thorpe?  Also Dave Winfield could have played as a pro in any one of the three major sports.  He probably shouldn't be #1 but should be on the top 10 list or maybe even top 5. I saw him climb left field wall, to rob a sure double, in the one game play off vs the Brewers in the strike season. His feet were better than half way up the wall in the old Yankee Stadium. I had a birds eye view from the first row of seats in left field.  Probably the most athletic play I've ever seen by an outfielder.

the question is greatest ATHLETE....bottom line that is either BO JACKSON or DEION SANDERS.....alot of these answers that are being given seem to be who they think dominated their sport the most....MJ, GRETZKY, ALI......they are not the ATHLETES that BO AND DEION were, bottom line.

Jim Brown was a great LaCrosse player.

Joe Mauer was the best baseball player and football player in his state his senior year of high school.

Charlie Ward: Heisman Trophy and NBA Point Guard

Besides Bo and Deion those above are off the top of my head

MJ was a great basketball player.
Gretzky was a great hockey player.
