I'm not sure if this is a phenomena in my community or just people that I come across, but does there seem to be a lot of grown men (labeled as anyone older than 24-35 and in the parameters of the Generation Y or Millennials and latter births of Generation X) still living at home?

Actually a bit mixed, 1 black, 2 Hispanic, 4 white.
Been self sufficient and on my own since 17. Couple short term stays in between college. Here is one case.
32 years old. College grad. Has worked up to assistant manager at a movie theater restaurant. A couple DUIs did him in and back with the kin folk. Finds it acceptable to live in parents place. They actually had a man cave room he would host get togethers. A chill place to have a fantasy draft or watch a game. Word is that parents have put their footdown and no longer allow visitors.

I considered that before I posted this topic Randis and aside from one of these "helping hands" the other guys are just bums who cant seem to get their act together. Most of these men are in 30s and live a lifestyle of a 20 year old. How some of them pick up women with no bachelor pad just baffles me. Some are still under the parents cell phone plans, car insurance, etc.,
My mom pushed for me to stay but by the time I graduated I was already earning and felt a sense of pride getting out and having my own spot. Been thru a dozen roommates, never really having many issues. Learned a lot about home economics that way.
Idk what the point of the thread is, I just noticed too many people mooching and that irks me.

power corrupts all, and this has twinkled down to the younger generations.
some gen y -born between 1978-86 are doing well, cant speak for them all. if u were doing loan refis during 2009-2013 u probably outearned 98% of the worlds population and 90% of your peers as housing boom is insane in many areas of the US!!!!
people have diff definition of gen Y. i know some GEN X that are constantly in jail and or live in motels.
in areas like NY or SF u need an income of 5000/month + to live on your own. and even then you will probably have a roommate or even 2, so it makes sense to live w. parents until you make 7000+

They are in their mid to late 50's and retired. I have a Bachelors degree in History and am currently looking for a teaching gig. I moved to NC almost 2 years ago to be with my family. My older brother moved here 7 years ago and my parents moved here over 3 years ago. I graduated from Texas State University. So I was in college/in Texas for 2 years roughly while my parents lived here in NC. So I graduated and felt obliged to move to NC and be closer to them. When I moved here I knew no one other than my family so they wanted me to move in with them which I definitely didn't mind. My parents are super chill and their favorite thing to do is care for their lawn (roughly 2 acres) so no one really "gets in anyones way".
As of now I am a server at a steakhouse just saving my money and paying off my student loan. What's the point of me living 1 mile down the street paying 600-700 bucks for rent/utilities/etc. A MONTH when I could live here for for free? Not to mention where my mom wants me to live I am the youngest child. Hahaha.
I mean, I plan to move out within the next year or so. Hopefully I can find a more career oriented job soon (I am feverishly on the prowl). Just my 2 cents. Some ppl I work with are amazed that my parents don't make me pay rent...but I mean, my dad made more in 6months at work than I have made in my life probably. My parents understand it is tough out there now. Some people are just lucky/more fortunate than others. That seems difficult for many people to understand....especially the ones whose families always "struggled" growing up. I know I sound like a jerk but based on my experiences that's what I have discovered
PS---anyone have any good MLB winners for me tonight? 0-3 since the end of the all star break

Hope your luck changes on baseball ad1260. I'm taking a break from gambling. I do play my buddy's WNBA picks time to time but Im gearing up for football. Trying to read up on as much info as I can. Really going to hit the fantasy props hard this year.
Your situation is one I can reason with. Our generation are the unfortunate ones. Maybe its the culture that suggested that we go to college and that guarantees us a solid job and middle class life. I'm glad I went to business school, degrees in Marketing and in Finance, but all I could find were sales jobs. I lucked out and got into management. I enjoy it and that's where I've chosen to focus on.
Cost of living is high
Many of our youth is drowned in student loan debt
Jobs aren't paying enough, especially entry level
And these people are accustomed to a standard or living at home with parents that they wouldn't be able to match out on their own.
I wonder how this issue will affect future generations. It could be positive. Parents and their children stay closer for a longer period of time.

i would not consider a 24 year old in this day and age and the economy in the state as it is in to be a man who should definitely be living on his own,,,, now a 30 year old man is a different story... if u r 30 and still living with ur parents there is something wrong with u... u definitely shouldnt be in a gambling forum because that is probably a big reason why u r still living with them

I have to agree with ilovethathook, and I even saw a special on this once. 24 is the new 18. By 24 I was already a homeowner, had traveled the world, and was months from getting my girlfriend pregnant. I felt I was a man. But not today's youth. Theyre boys until they get out the house.

yep i know plenty of 27-33 year old girls that are not even married.
times have changed, ppl are not getting married or buying homes anymore. esp if u live in NY OR LA or SF areas. high price of living have delayed marriage/pregnancies.

Yeah, I read the other day that the average student loan debt of the 2012 graduating class was like 36K-------that translates into about roughly 400 bucks a month usually in payments. Imagine combining that with a 600-800 dollar rent payment alone. Then you are talking about some hefty coin on rent/student loan payment alone, not to mention all of the other crap that goes along with life.
Yeah, I think I am taking a few days from betting baseball as well. I am usually decent but have been struggling this season. Football is definitely my forte for sure (NFL in particular)....hopefully I do as well this year as I did last year. Damn, it can't come soon enough
BUT I haven't given up on baseball quite yet.

Everyones situation is different, there is a huge difference between someone trying hard to make ends meet with crippling student loan debt and a guy who has none who will never make more than 50k a year. This is purely anecdotal, but the majority of people I know who live on their own between 23-29 aren't smart enough to swallow water. I envy none of their lives.
Did we choose to take on the student loan debt? You bet. Doesn't mean there isn't some incredibly intelligent and hard working people who decided to swallow their pride for a few years in order to catch up.
Also I don't see what the need to get off a family cell phone plan is? It's literally a win for everyone involved.
You want to rip on people who live at home with no futures, by all means go ahead I'll have a laugh with you (I don't even know how these guys get laid but they do) but don't slight anyone who tried to better their lives by furthering their education.

They can't afford to move out because of the economy. It's the Obama syndrome. Nothing will change until Republicans hold the Senate and House of Representatives. The election on 2014 should solve this problem and family members will move on.

In my family you are expected to live at home until you get married. That is when the responsibilities of man hood begin. My dad moved back and lived with his parents after he got drafted in the military. Did he work? Sure he worked at a savings and loan for 13 years after the service. But as far as my family goes they don't expect me to get my own place until i get married or get some girl knocked up. When i do something like that i should be held accountable and responsible for my decisions. As long as im working and paying my bills they don't mind me staying at home at all actually encourage it.

But we have to coddle this generation. They make excuses for everything.
I agree. Parents allowing their kids to live with them for an extended period of time after college are actually doing their kids a huge disservice. Getting the college diploma is only the first step. After graduating college-it's freshman year of learning to survive in the real world. The learning doesn't stop when you receive the diploma. When you're on your own- the debts staring you in the face force you to go out & work 2 maybe 3 jobs to do the best you can to pay off those bills. They've got to be paid. You have a sense of urgency to make money-you HAVE to do it. Living at home-there's no real urgency to do anything. Older kids living at home are only delaying their inevitable day of reckoning of surviving in the real world.
