bill702----yes, I am the one attempting to become a teacher (much tougher than one would think) the job market for teachers in my area is flooded. So I am open to almost anything that might get me started in a career. I actually had an interview for an assistant managers position at Hollister yesterday (yes, the same Hollister that is owned by Abercrombie and Fitch and that is super DOUCHEY). Hahahahahaha I by no means wear their clothes (mainly because they are designed for freaking teenagers lmao....I love the 40 year old men that still don't realize this . Seemed semi promising so I will see where that leads.
My wife is actually a teacher, she finished her masters in special education four years ago and it took her over a year to find a job so I know the struggles.
And yeah, being in the service industry you learn that it is full of deadbeats, drug addicts, alcoholics, the list could go on and on. However, there are some good people that wait tables (I like to think of myself as one of them)....it's definitely a tough job but there is ZERO gratification in it. But it can be entertaining and for the most part, my coworkers are cool (despite their slew of problems). But it's time for me to get real, I need something with more substance...I've been waiting tables almost 2 years now and I can say I've just about had my fill
Yes, that's what put me through school and allowed me to travel a little bit. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world as it was definitely an experience. You get both ends of the spectrum the functionable druggies and the hard working normal Americans. I always worked at a trendy casino and made way more then a server ever should and got sick of it so I understand that you got your fill.
I'm young and open to anything that comes my way. I love to sports bet (especially football and baseball, mainly football) and love to play poker..traits i learned from my grandpa whom was a bookie. It'll probably always be in my blood for sure. My dream would be to be a pro gambler living in Vegas lmao but I am a very realistic person and that probably won't happen. At least not in the next 10 years haha. Some times I go check out the "Las Vegas" forum and read all the horror stories of people that are trying to do that. Instant reality check.
You're single and have a pretty solid safety net from what it seams. A couple month experiment won't hurt anyone especially if you get one of those jobs teaching overseas where it's on a contract basis. Might as well give it a try.
On a lighter night come on SOX RL! Big Papi up to bat in the 8th 2 on 1 out....
Anyways, I didn't want you to take what I said personal and good-luck. I'm sure you will find something.

I'm not sure if this is a phenomena in my community or just people that I come across, but does there seem to be a lot of grown men (labeled as anyone older than 24-35 and in the parameters of the Generation Y or Millennials and latter births of Generation X) still living at home?
I got a Mexican guy 20 years old, His Brother is a regular customer at my restaurant and asked me to give him a job, I did
This kid is useless He no called no showed today and his brother came in, I was like what the hell bro.
He said, he moved in with his sister because he made him get a job.
Yeah another kid delivery driver, Tells me Yesterday he is done, I said why out of curiosity
He says delivering pizzas and washing dishes and sweeping and mopping is too much for minimum wage and tips?????????
Wow, this generation is useless.

I think the useless ones are the 60 and 70 year olds who constantly looked stupid every time they open there mouths. Geraldo, Limbaugh, come to mind. How can you live that long and be that ignorant. Guys like that really hold the world back from going forward. By the way, not many people can survive alone off of minimum wage. If your working a job and can still apply for government assistance what good are you really doing society?

What part of Minimum wage + tips did you not comprehend?
Or did you do what most of your pathetic, useless, young generation did and only read what you wanted to.
Selective reading is another reason that kids today are completely useless.

Look at the old guy, brain so eating alive that he resorts to name calling. Tips can be inconsistent that is why they are not usually counted when someone is looking for true income.

mafioso, you have a kid or 2 right? What they become has yet to be determined but I would avoid generalizing too much. "Selective reading is another reason that kids today are completely useless". Just be careful with your wording
IF you think the "kids" of this generation (the 20 somethings) are bad wait until the children of today are 20-25. All these kids do is stay glued to an IPad or their parents Iphone playing games ALLLLLLLL THE TIME. Like I said, I am a server and half the time these kids can't even look up at me to tell me what they want to eat because they are 100% glued to/fixated on the game they are playing...it's pretty pathetic. Their social skills are suffering bit time. The worst part is, most of these box parents think that it is okay behavior
Again, not trying to be confrontational (I am like Rex from Toy Story ).....but just watch out when generalizing a huge group of people.

When I say "this generation" I guess I am referring to my generation
Another thing about the parents being such whimps.....I think they don't mind letting their kids play on the IPad and Iphone because it simply keeps them out of their hair. Talk about taking the easy way out when it comes to parenting. It's bad. Very bad.

What you said
" what good are you really doing society?"
How do I or anyone else even begin to delve into just how stupid that question was?
I mean really.
What good do the following establishments do for society
McDonalds
Chic Fil A
Burger King
Pizza Hut
Dominos
Little Ceasers Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag
Round table
Shakeys
K-Mart
Local Grocery stores
JC Penny
Footlocker
Any Job at a local mall
Yet, you choose to single me out?
A small business owner who goes above and beyond and actually cares about most of his employees.
Your question was dumb and Im calling you out on it
I am 39 years old I own my own business I have been my own boss since i was 24 years old
Iv been working since i was 15 years
If todays Generation had 1/2 my will to better themselves the world would be a much better place today.
Delivery driving isnt meant to be a lifetime job, Its meant for young people to make some money buy there own gas and be less of a burden on there parents while hopefully they are going to school to better themselves.
I tell my staff all the time
If you are not a cook here and you are in in your mid 20s and still work here, Your life as you know it is SHYTE its over for you.
Its a transitional job, if they cant handle a few dishes sweeping and mopping then I fear the world is doomed as these types are the future

I bet your life is better if you're making minimum wage+tips compared to making 0 and fully living off the government tit.

If he simply puts in an 8 hour shift and lets say the join sold $1000 and he gets 1% tipout, he would have about $70 more than he started with that day. Enough to get a big bag of Fritos, a pineapple Jarritos and when he turns 21, room temperature Tecate. That my friend is what America is all about. I still love this place.

generation Y is the video game generation.... so you want to explain the drain on time, resource and energy resulting in this generation y being dead beats... I would say that if you have young adult living at home with no job, there has to be a video game system that he clocks in hours... I mean if this generation could cash in time playing video games they would all be millionaires...
also this is the product of the baby boom echo... so there are alot of them... and their parents from the materialistic "me" generation have failed to instill solid values....

Just read through this thread and i have to say seems like the majority of you are really tough parents...What happened to unconditionally loving your children? Calling yourself a "failure" for not having your 18 year-old or even 22 year old graduate a fully independent adult sounds like your a bit tough on yourself.
Times have changed since many of you (born between 1965-1975) were early 20 year olds especially since im guessing not all of you went to college. Well not a days my generation (i'm 23) college is an expectation w/o a degree your literally fucked so the domino effect of expected college will obviously delay full-adult hood (college --> loans --> living with parents to save $ ---> delays marriage/kids/house/mortgage etc.)
One isn't "failing" or a "bum" for doing something economically viable like living with his parents for 12-24 months after graduation to save some significant $ while working entry level jobs, which I might add and agree with, are not paying much at all. I have friends entry-level making 60k and are living paycheck to paycheck in Manhattan. Sure you can pick some extreme examples like irresponsible mexican kids who don't show up for work on time or gamble or drink irresonsibly, but that is definitely not the majority of 23-28 year olds.
Sorry for the rant, but just wanted to paint a realistic picture for how it is for my generation in today's society....In fact, delaying responsibilities such as marriage and kids until your late 20's is actually the appropriate way to do it. Thats exactly why responsible people like myself, and friends (mostly) wear condoms or use plan b if accidents happen. It would actually be highly irresponsible to bring a kid into this world or commit your life to a women prematurely when you don't have a stable salary or career situation to support a family.
Interesting topic and good conversation its rare to find such a quality discussion on something other that sports betting on this website

My Dad told me and my siblings to go away at 18. We had a choice, go to college or go to work. But either way we were moving out. He did it for our own good and looking back on it, he did the right thing.

The key there is that most entry level jobs pay like 27-40k (40 being generous) in most place (60 in Manhattan seems right and like you said, is basically nothing because it's Manhattan).
27-40k a year translates to like 500-650 bucks a week roughly.....point being that isn't sh*t

Another thing about this thread that doesn't make sense is what happens when the parents get to the age where the children have to take care of them. Not every parent wants to be sent to some nursing home. The parents shouldn't expect for the kids to come back and take care of them or move them into there places after kicking them to the curb. I don't think you can put a time table on this stuff. You should not be freeloading off of people. If that is what you are essentially saying agree but I think most people here are on there high horses and overstepping there boundaries when it comes to judging others.
Nothing to get upset about typical Americans.

Why does loving your kids unconditionally have to be synonymous with enabling them to be lazy? I'm not saying I'm going to put all their stuff on the front lawn when they hit that golden age of 18, but rest assured they will have a tangible plan. The transitional periods in life I would have no problem with them living with me, but there is a limit. If they keep their grades in line with my expectations their college will be paid for, so they have the tools to succeed if they choose to.
Yes college is a necessity in these days, but I don't see that as a bad thing. The college experience is a good way to transition you from a know it all teen to a well rounded adult.

If it were a necessity it would be free
I'd rather hire a 24 year old with 4-5 years on the job experience than a person the same age who has a piece of paper that says he/she should know how to do something.

The college experience was one that I will forever cherish. I stayed in state but still moved away. Did I really need to do the things I needed to do in order to survive? Probably not. Could have just stayed home, there was a perfectly good school to attend, my mother was an excellent cook, and we had a real cool house, also my high school sweetheart was around. As the gentleman just mentioned, "college experience is a good way to transition you from know it all teen to a well rounded adult."
And I think it is perfectly acceptable to come home after graduation, in the event you have not landed a job, or if you had, an entry level that does not offer an acceptable wage to live off of.
I compare two of my most beloved friends. One was like myself, always about the hustle and was out on his own fresh out of high school. He did not go to college, failed at a business, and after working retail, landed a sales job which he has excelled at. In the 10 years following graduation, he is very successful.
The other guy stuck around the house. Also did not go to college and possibly had a substance abuse issue. Moved out only for a brief period of time at a young age but quickly returned. Years later was renting rooms and after a setback, moved back in, this time following the family to another state. 30 years old and still at home. Has peeked financially at his job, has potential as he is a great salesman based on record with the ladies.
The variance in annual earnings between these two is $60K+ That's just the difference.
Again, there is nothing wrong with a stint at home. Nothing. Parents are generally happy to see their offspring, its just natural. But what I'm seeing as previously mentioned is the youth that is staying at home is abusing their situations and stunting their development. Someone also chimed in, that these bums are at gamestop, not only dropping $60 for a game, then also burning hours and brain cells during a time they should be accumulating.
