    VH2,

They are talking about the debt relative to the drill rigs which will be completed over the next two years, that and the debt which came with the OR entity.

With this market who the hell knows if anyone makes it.

    Hat,

Earnings were good..minus a bad investment with Lehman they made 17 cents.

Up in after hours, I think they are just fine.

    Hat,

In years past if the market was getting smacked like this, HLIT would be down to 2 bucks.

They have turned the corner and are a stronger diversified company now revenues wise. They are selling more higher margin products than in the past and given the market they have held in quite nicely.

hey guys- don't post much here, but i'm a PE guy and do actively trade for my PA so thought i'd join the fun.

DRYS was a fun stock to trade when hedge funds created a market for it.  I would stay far, far away from anything related going forward.  you have better luck in blackjack.  never try to catch a falling knife...especially since they all have new ships coming online...

claycourtlesson---indeed, the more the media talks about "capitulation" the more we won't get it. we just get beat down daily, slow and orderly.

basically my recent thesis is this---avoid any and all stocks that hedge fund momentum players owned.  they will sell into any rally- ags, high beta energys, global growth names, infrastruture plays etc.

i like DNA---was 71 on 10/10 and i was shocked so scooped it up at that time (i had sold at 98 3 months ago).  put on 15 points in a week.  will scoop more of it up if it gets back there.  Roche still has an 89 bid in there and confirmed it last week.  NVS is another drug stock i'm eyeing...

on the short side, i've covered all my shorts (DUG, SRS, SKF, DZZ most recently).  i don't like the short risk/reward relationship currently, though if we plunge through 10/10 lows, may have to.  waiting for a new entry point to short gold....the one commodity that hasn't tanked, but it will. will wait till this counter trend rally plays out a bit.

btw- i should add, yes the merger arbs of course are in DNA but i would hardly call it a momentum play.  its actually rather safe in this market.

    For a "Trade" only...............

At 1000 today, the consumer confidence measure will be released.  Everyone and his dog know it will be the worst number ever seen since probably the 70s.  The knee jerk reaction out of the yahoos will be to head for the hills and sell-----and it'll last about 6-7 minutes, then it will be time to get long SPY for a "trade" only.

    Keeping it simple.

Honestly, there is no surprise DRYS is tanking.  I'll give you a quick example why.  The 100+ year old steel plant, which is the city's main employer in my city gave layoff notices to all employees last week.  Why?  Because no one is buying steel.  Now, steel is shipped all over the world from here by cargo ships.  Ergo, no one buying steel = no need for cargo ships!  Now imagine multiple industries that use cargo shipping who aren't getting any more orders and you can see why it's tanking.  Plus DRYS have got more ships coming online that won't be needed either.

Now, that's not to say it won't recover, it's actually in a very, very good position to recover when this mess we are in gets taken care of.  But to buy and hold this stock at the moment won't show any returns, and you can expect to take a short term loss.  This would be a good buy when the economy gets going again.

I would say you will need a ten year outlook, not five years. I may be overly pessimistic, but I think this recession is going to be so deep and global that it will surprise people, especially economics profs!!

Hell they were clueless and still debating if there was going to be one, recently!! LOL.

I'm not so sure about that.  These names traded in a very narrow range for years and only broke out with the aid of a ton of cheap money for hedge funds.  If you believe that the cheap money is really going to go away, then I'd expect the stocks to trade in a similar narrow range as before.

I know WSC hates this, but I think that goes for the shippers as well

I dont mind different points of view.

I just think that SOME stocks have fallen well below book value and reasonable PE levels because of fear and hedge selling. This wasnt done over a years time or 6 months time, some of these stocks are down 90% plus in THREE MONTHS, that isnt rational and that isnt a  balanced market taking out excesses, that is money running out the door plus those in the know taking advantage and selling short while the others are selling.

Dont think for a moment that these secretive hedgie positions being liquidates arent known by other guys who can take advantage of selling by their neighbors, no doubt in my mind that happened and is happening.

    Vermeer-

You may be right.  Might be 10 years, but since I see DOW 20,000 by end of 2014, I'll say 5.

DISCLAIMER-DOW 20,000 in 2014 will be like DOW 8,000 in 2008 when you factor in the inflation that is about to run rampant.

    Jax-

What we saw in commodity inflation for the first part of 2008 won't even hold a candle to what you'll see after 2009, man.

We are about to enter "hyperinflation" in about a year---when the bill for these GDMF-ING bailout packages for Wall Street rich kids falls due, and yours and my taxes go through the roof with that idiot Obama in the WH.

You think times are bad now, man?  You ain't seen nothing yet.  POT, ACI, and CHK will beat inflation.

Clay are you backing off of your armageddon outlook?

I ask because if you are sticking to that then who is going to be buying the fertilizer, steel and nat gas from those three and their competitors around the world?

We are up 400 points at 2:45pm by the way

Yes, Jax, unfortunately for all of us, "Armageddon" has been delayed for about 5-10 years cause of the bailout packages that have been rammed down our throats so fascist Hank could save his Wall Street cronies in the good ol' boy network.  That is a fact.

We'd all have been better off just letting the economic sh--storm hit full throttle back in late summer 2007 when subprime broke.

But instead, we put bandaids and duct tape all over the place so the dam wouldn't break back then----and it should have been allowed to break, cause when it finally does go caput in 2015 or so, it'll be way worse than it would've been in 2007.

I am lucky that I am an old fart, cause I damn sure wouldn't want to be a young 'un in this mess coming up.

Oh hell yes, Armageddon is coming------just not as soon as it should've been allowed to come.

    WSC-

No, he hedges all his bets with time, so he's usually right.  But I do agree with him on the central bank always getting it wrong.

Those central bank dummies are basically a bunch of scholarly blow-hards who never keep up to date with the times, and thus, are "always behind the curve."

Any fool could've told you this country was in a full blow recession by last December-----but these idiots are "STILL" wondering.

Going to take money and run before this thing gets sold off to up 34.45 points for the day.
